Transporting Hazardous Materials
•
Between Labs
– Place containers of hazardous materials in
secondary containment.
•
Between buildings
– Place containers in a cart with containment on cart
– Containment on the cart would be either a bin or
tray or sides on cart
•
Off-site/downtown campus
– DO NOT TRANSPORT HAZARDOUS
MATERIALS OFF-SITE
– Clarkson is not permitted by the DOT to transport
on public roadways
Shipping Hazardous Materials
All shipments of hazardous materials must be directed through the Shipping and Receiving
Department. They can be contacted at x6543.
Be prepared to provide them with chemical composition, quantity, hazardous properties, etc.
– Submit MSDS with materials
– Do NOT re-use boxes with UN numbers on the box
– Shipping & Receiving will determine whether Clarkson can ship the item
Plan accordingly, as it will take a few days to two weeks to prepare and properly document the
package.
Hazardous materials, for the purpose of transportation, are those in one or more one of the following
groups:
 Explosive materials
 Gases
 Flammable liquids
 Combustible liquids
 Flammable or & water-reactive solids
 Oxidizers
 Poisonous materials
 Infectious materials
 Radioactive materials
 Corrosive materials
 Miscellaneous hazardous materials
(including dry ice)
