Beech Tree Publishing to preserve e-journals in Portico
Non-profit electronic archiving service provider Portico has announced a preservation agreement
with Beech Tree Publishing. Under the deal, Portico will preserve the latter's collection of three ejournals. As part of the agreement, Beech Tree will make an annual contribution to Portico and has
also named Portico as a mechanism to provide post-cancellation access to the titles committed to

the archive.

European Commission okays Google project to digitise archives of Dutch library
The European Commission has reportedly stated that it does not object to Google digitising 160,000
books in the archives of the National Library of the Netherlands if these will be made available
publicly. The Dutch library, Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), recently announced an agreement with
Internet search services provider Google to digitise more than 160,000 out-of-copyright (public
domain) books from the library's collection. The works from the 18th and 19th centuries will be fully
searchable and accessible for free via Google Books and various KB websites. These books will also
be accessible via the EU's Europeana portal in the near future.

Springer to distribute eBooks from Sense Publishers
STM publisher Springer has announced an agreement with international academic publishing house
Sense Publishers. Under the deal, Springer will distribute the latter's book program as part of
Springer's eBook collection on www.springerlink.com, starting in 2011.

EBSCO Publishing acquires two SAGE databases
Electronic research databases provider EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) has acquired two databases from
academic publisher SAGE. These are: Criminal Justice Abstracts and Communication Abstracts. The
deal will bring two leading databases in their fields to users through the EBSCOhost platform.

National Technical Information Service to be official distributor of Death Master File
The National Technical Information Service (NTIS), an agency of the US Department of Commerce,
has announced that it has been named the authorised official distributor of the Social Security
Administration's (SSA) Death Master File (DMF). The DMF is used by leading government, financial,
investigative, credit reporting organisation, medical research, and other industries to verify identity
as well as prevent fraud in compliance with the USA Patriot Act.

Google acquires Metaweb to improve search
Internet search services provider Google Inc. has acquired Metaweb, a company that maintains an
open database of people, places, and things called Freebase. Google will integrate this information
into its search algorithms. This is expected to further boost Google’s ability to accept search

queries, and to provide smart contextual information based on the synthesis of the search input.

Wiley to be exclusive global publisher and distributor of RSMeans professional reference titles
Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. and RSMeans, North America’s leading supplier of construction
cost information, have announced a partnership to deliver a new generation of reference materials
to the commercial and residential construction markets. Under the deal, Wiley will be the exclusive

North Carolina selects Thomson Reuters for healthcare reporting and analytics
Information services provider Thomson Reuters has announced that the North Carolina Department
of Health & Human Services has awarded the company a five-year contract to provide a healthcare
reporting and analytics system. The system will enable the State of North Carolina to better manage
all of its health programmes.

Journal of NeuroVirology to join Springer's neuroscience portfolio
STM publisher Springer has announced that it will publish the Journal of NeuroVirology (JNV), a
publication closely affiliated with the International Society for NeuroVirology, starting January
2011. Previously published by Taylor & Francis/Informa, the five-year contract with Springer runs to
2015.

Molecular Neurodegeneration named official OA journal of the AHAF
The American Health Assistance Foundation (AHAF) has announced a new partnership with open
access (OA) publisher BioMed Central's OA journal, Molecular Neurodegeneration (MN). Under the
deal, Molecular Neurodegeneration will be the official open access journal of the AHAF. The journal
publishes peer-reviewed, original scientific research on the causes of neurodegenerative diseases,
like Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, and on the pre-clinical testing of potential therapies for these
diseases.

Califa Library Group becomes latest partner in the OCLC Partnership Program
Global library cooperative Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) has announced the Califa
Library Group as the latest partner in the OCLC Partnership Program. As partners, OCLC and Califa

Combined Book Services to join PubEasy community as affiliate
Books enquiry and ordering services provider PubEasy has announced that Combined Book Services
(CBS) will join the e-community of PubEasy as an affiliate. CBS is an independent book distributor
known for its tailored distribution service for trade, academic and STM publishers. When CBS goes
live (scheduled for Autumn 2010), titles serviced via its UK distribution facilities will be available to

Radiographic Anatomy, a compact, portable guide to basic radiographic anatomy, written by experts

discoverability and usefulness of scientific chemistry content. This added functionality seeks to

CCC announces enhancements to online licensing tool - Rightslink
Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), a not-for-profit organisation providing copyright licensing
solutions, has announced that it has upgraded its online licensing tool Rightslink. Rightslink allows
content users to obtain instant reprint and permission services directly on publishers' websites. The
new version of Rightslink includes new features that make it easier for publishers to provide their
users with the ability to obtain reprints through their respective sites.

Global water organisations launch new journal - World Water: Water Reuse & Desalination
The Water Environment Federation (WEF), WateReuse Association (WRA), and the WateReuse
Research Foundation (WRRF) recently announced the launch of a new journal - World Water: Water
Reuse & Desalination. The collaborative journal is designed to address the growing informational,
technical and operational needs of global water reuse and desalination professionals. The journal
will be unveiled at WateReuse's 25th Annual Symposium in September. The inaugural issue will be
launched at WEF's 2010 Annual Meeting, WEFTEC 2010, in October.

SAE International survey reveals mobility engineers' high levels of engagement with social media
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International has released a whitepaper on social media
usage of mobility engineers. The paper titled 'Do mobility engineers use social media?' outlines the

engineers are using social media today.

Mobile internet access rapidly growing in China, says CNNIC report
The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) has released a report, according to which,
mobile internet access is rapidly growing in China, representing about two-thirds of Internet users in

the country. The report notes that nearly 65 percent of the total internet users accessed the web
through their mobile phones as of June 30, 2010. While mobile internet usage recorded an 18
percent increase in the first half of 2010, internet penetration rate in China is still far behind
developed nations such as the US and Japan, says the report.

New NanoMarkets report projects strong prospects for e-paper display industry
Industry analyst firm NanoMarkets LC has released a new report, according to which, the e-paper
display business has survived a tough year and has emerged as a mainstream display technology with
strong prospects going forward. The report goes on to project that by 2015, revenues for e-paper
space will reach $2.6 billion.

Ground Truth study notes lack of naming convention in consumer mobile browsing
Ground Truth, a provider of mobile measurement services, has published a census-level analysis of
mobile web domains. The company says that to attract the largest audience, mobile web publishers
must deploy across multiple domain standards. It has been observed that since the inception of the
mobile web, there has been no clear consensus around how the various mobile web domains - ‘m.’,
‘wap.’, ‘.mobile’ and ‘.mobi’ - should be used. In this first census-level analysis, Ground Truth
seeks to offer the required data for this debate. It says that no single naming convention has
emerged to adequately optimise consumer mobile browsing.

AMA releases two new reports to help physicians optimise quality and safety of patient care
The American Medical Association (AMA) has released two new reports to help physicians optimise
the quality and safety of patient care. A guide to patient safety organisations (PSOs) is being
offered free online to all physicians to help them participate in PSOs, a way for physicians to
voluntarily report and learn from adverse safety events. The second report, a study of medical
societies' role in helping guide quality improvement initiatives, finds that physicians strongly believe
that AMA is best equipped to assist physicians with improving the quality of healthcare.

JISC and British Library release first annual report on three-year study of doctoral researchers
The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and the British Library have released the first
annual report of a major three-year study of doctoral researchers. The report shows substantial
overlap between information-seeking habits of Generation Y and older students - challenging initial
assumptions that they are more digitally dependent, technology savvy and willing to share their
research.

Tiff with Chinese govt. cost Google some market share, says report
Research firm Analysys International has released a report that says Google's share of the Chinese
search engine market declined in the second quarter while it was involved in a public battle with
Beijing over censorship. The search engine firm saw its market share fall to 24.2 percent in the
three months to June, from 30.9 percent in the first quarter, Analysys International states in the
report. Domestic web search engine Baidu witnessed an increase in its market share to 70 percent in
the second quarter from 64 percent in the first. According to the research firm, uncertainty over
Google helped Baidu expand its market share.

Google closes down two China-based online services
Internet search services provider Google, Inc. has announced its decision to shut down two of its
China-based online services - a self-developed website ranking page and a lifestyle site. In addition,
Google will discontinue technical support to two services for local business partner Tianya.cn. The
decision comes nearly 10 days after Beijing renewed Google's licence to continue operations in the
country as an Internet Content Provider (ICP).

Nominations for 2011 Service Quality Evaluation Academy called for
The 2011 Service Quality Evaluation Academy, co-sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries
(ARL) and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), is now accepting participant
nominations, with a deadline of December 15, 2010. The event is scheduled for March 14-18, 2011,
in Toronto, Canada. The academy is an intensive five-day program that focuses on both qualitative
and quantitative methods for collecting and analysing library service quality data.

Open Educational Resources programme seeks to drive UK content revolution
The UK’s Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) has announced that the International Open
Educational Resources (OER) Symposium will be held in London on July 23, 2010. Speaking ahead of
the OER symposium, Brian Lamb from the University of British Columbia has urged higher education
to show leadership in difficult times. OER, a programme of JISC and the Higher Education Academy,
is seeking to drive a content revolution in the UK. It is working with universities and colleges to
share educational materials freely online and make them available to anyone worldwide.

Registration for fifth webinar in the ARL-ACRL ISC series to close on July 21
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Association of College and Research Libraries
(ACRL) have announced that registration for the fifth webinar in the ARL-ACRL Institute on Scholarly
Communication (ISC) series, Strengthening Programs through Collaboration, will close on July 21,

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has released an archive of the webcast, 'Envisioning the

Discovery sues Amazon for patent infringement over Kindle for the second time
Media company Discovery Communications intellectual property subsidiary Discovery Patent
Holdings has reportedly filed a suit against online books retailer Amazon.com, Inc. According to the
company, Amazon's line of Kindle e-book readers infringe on two patents held by the company. The
suit is the second between the two companies over such technologies.

BMJ, Lancet criticise British govt. plans to reorganise NHS
British medical journals The BMJ and The Lancet have criticised UK Health Secretary Andrew
Lansley's plans for the reorganisation of the NHS. The government has admitted that £1.7 billion had
been set aside to fund the changes in the first year. Both Lancet and BMJ have published separate
editorials criticising the limitation in NHS funding and proposals set out in a white paper titled
‘Liberating the NHS’.

NIH grant to support Milwaukee-wide research partnership
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a $20 million grant to The Medical College of
Wisconsin, representing a consortium of eight Milwaukee institutions, to create a Milwaukee-wide
research partnership that shares a common vision, resources and staff to advance biomedical
research, patient care and education. The funding has been awarded through the NIH’s Clinical and
Translational Science Awards (CTSA) programme. The Medical College was one of nine centers
nationwide to receive the new CTSA funding.

Emerald and CLADEA call for applications for the 2010 Latin American Management Research
Fund Award
Academic and professional literature publisher Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., in collaboration with
Consejo Latinoamericano de Escuelas de Administración (CLADEA), is calling for applications for the
2010 Latin American Management Research Fund Award. Applications should address the

E-Resource Access and Management Services (ERAMS) provider Serials Solutions has announced that
the University of Michigan (U-M) has chosen the Summon web-scale discovery service to make

ARL, ALA and EDUCAUSE file comments in support of the FCC's 'Third Way'
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has joined the American Library Association (ALA) and
EDUCAUSE in voicing support for the FCC’s Notice of Inquiry (NOI) proposing a ‘third way’ forward
on the difficult question of regulatory authority over broadband Internet access service. The
associations urged the FCC to act quickly and responsibly to re-establish its authority over
broadband access so that it can return to its vital role in encouraging broadband rollout and
adoption and protecting the openness of the Internet.

Northeastern University selects EBSCO Discovery Service for unified search experience
Electronic research databases provider EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) has announced that the
Northeastern University has chosen to work with the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), a unified,
customised index of available information resources, to explore the impact of a one-stop 'discovery'
system on user research. Northeastern will work with EBSCO in the next several months to add its
Institutional Repository and local digitised content into EDS, providing even more content from the
single search interface.

Amazon reports increased sales of Kindle following price cut
Online books retailer Amazon.com, Inc. has announced that Kindle device unit sales accelerated
each month in the second quarter - both on a sequential month-over-month basis and on a yearover-year basis. According to the company, the growth rate of Kindle, its e-book reader, tripled
since the price was lowered from $259 to $189. Over the past month, for every 100 hardcover books
Amazon.com has sold, it has sold 180 Kindle books.

Apple Inc. announces iPad availability in nine more countries
Apple Inc., a US-based multinational corporation that designs and markets consumer electronics,
computer software, and personal computers, has announced that iPad will be available in nine more
countries from July 23, 2010. These include Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg,
Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore.

Online First Publication for all APA-published journal articles now available in the PsycARTICLES
database
The American Psychological Association (APA) has announced the immediate availability of Online
First Publication (OFP) for APA-published journal articles in the PsycARTICLES database. Articles
accepted for publication will now be available in electronic format prior to the print publication,
expediting access to the latest peer-reviewed research. All PsycARTICLES institutional customers,
individual APA PsycNET database package subscribers, and individual journal subscribers may now
search these records as an added benefit.

Government of Canada to review Revised Foreign Investment Policy in Book Publishing and
Distribution
The Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, James Moore, has announced a review of
the Revised Foreign Investment Policy in Book Publishing and Distribution, which will include
consultations with individuals and organisations interested in Canadian books. The review will seek
to ensure that Canada's foreign investment policy for the book sector reflects new realities and
supports the Government's goal of ensuring that readers everywhere have access to a wide range of
Canadian-authored books.

Medcounselor Drug Information now available on ISMP's consumer website
Drug information and medication management solutions provider Gold Standard/Elsevier has
announced that the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) has licensed MEDcounselor Drug
Information, Drug IDentifer and Drug Interaction modules for its consumer website
ConsumerMedSafety.org. ISMP is a federally certified patient safety organisation that focuses on
preventing medication errors and adverse drug events, and offers legal protection and
confidentiality for submitted patient safety and error reports.
