Arif AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF PGMI: - Teaching and training of postgraduate doctors to the highest standards Promotion of research in medical fields Improvement in patient care with special emphasis on ethics and communication skills BACKGROUND OF PGMI: HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF PGMI: Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) was established by the Government of NWFP Health Department in 1984. The main purpose of this Institute was to impart postgraduate medical training to doctors of this Province in various fields of medicine, surgery and its allied sub-specialties. PGMI started functioning initially at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), Peshawar and started training 90 postgraduate trainees for Diploma courses and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan (CPSP) degrees of FCPS and MCPS. With the passage of time the will of young doctors to receive postgraduate training and degrees increased and so did the number of applicants for training slots at PGMI which stands at 729 in 2008. PGMI is affiliated to Khyber Medical University, Peshawar for the award of degrees and diplomas and recognized/accredited by College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan for the award of FCPS and MCPS diplomas in various specialties. Currently PGMI is imparting Postgraduate Medical Training leading to the following Degrees/Diplomas from Khyber Medical University, Peshawar and College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan: - FCPS 24 subjects - MCPS/DCPS 13 subjects - Diploma Courses 11 subjects - Degree courses MPH and PhD CONSTITUENT AND AFFILIATED HOSPITALS OF PGMI AND ROLE OF PGMI IN POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL TRAINING: PGMI acts as the main body for the selection and distribution of Trainee Medical Officers for FCPS as well as MCPS and Diploma training programs. All the training records and salary/stipend records of TMOs are maintained by PGMI head office located at Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar. Constituent Hospitals of PGMI include Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) and Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC), Peshawar. Affiliated Hospitals of PGMI include Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH), Khyber College of Dentistry (KCD), Khyber Medical College (KMC), Peshawar and Ayub Teaching Hospital (ATH), Abbottabad. Shortly, Hospitals at Dera Ismail Khan and Saidu Groups of Hospitals shall also become affiliated to PGMI. FCPS Courses: In 2008, 729 postgraduate TMOs are being trained for FCPS in various specialties (24 subjects) at various constituent/affiliated Hospitals of PGMI. Currently, the distribution of FCPS trainees at various constituent/affiliated Hospitals of PGMI is as follows: - 269 TMOs are being trained at LRH (Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar) - 170 at HMC (Hayatabad Medical Complex) - 207 at KTH (Khyber Teaching Hospital) and 02 at KMC. - 96 at ATH (Ayub Teaching Hospital), - 22 at KCD (Khyber College of Dentistry) Diploma and MCPS courses: In addition to FCPS, the two constituent Hospitals of PGMI, LRH and HMC, are also training Diploma students and MCPS trainees in various sub-specialties. - Currently six Diploma courses are offered by PGMI at LRH and HMC (and additional five diploma courses in various sub-specialties shall also be offered from 2009). Diploma courses include: DCP, DCH, DGO, DLO, DO, DA, Dip. Card., Diploma Medical Oncology, Dip Diabetology, DTCD, MPH (Community Mental Health) granted by Khyber Medical University. - MCPS training is also offered by PGMI in 13 different specialties. - These Diplomas and MCPS trained doctors are now playing a major role in providing specialist Health care in rural areas of the province providing people with advanced medical facilities at their door step. Hospital wise distribution of all TMOs, under the supervision of PGMI, for FCPS, MCPS/DCPS, Diploma courses combined is as follows: - LRH: 367 - HMC: 254 - KTH: 257 - ATH: 113 - KCD: 38 Grand Total = 1029 postgraduate trainees INFRASTUCTURE OF PGMI: - - Total teaching units at LRH and HMC: 41 Video conferencing facilities between LRH and HMC available State of the art libraries both at LRH and HMC with DSL internet facilities, computers and1326 text and reference books and subscription to over 40 national and international medical and allied journals High speed DSL internet connection and computers/multi-media in all teaching units Access for over 40000 journals and 20000 e-books through HEC digital library Offices for Administrative staff and faculty members with car parking TMOs hostels for most of the TMOs New state of the art purpose built PGMI head office at Hayatabad Medical Complex is under construction and will be ready by 2010 Demonstration rooms in HMC: 12 Demonstration rooms in LRH: 14 Lecture Halls (Auditoria): 03 Transportation: one mini-bus and a staff car OVERALL ACHIEVEMENTS OF PGMI SINCE ITS INCEPTION: In addition to its major role in faculty development and the establishment of teaching units in advanced, sub-specialty fields of medicine/surgery as well as its impact on the evolution of various teaching hospitals of NWFP, PGMI has produced a large number of specialists, details of which are as under: - FCPS pass specialists: 932 - Diploma pass specialists: 428 Total FCPS and Diploma doctors produced in NWFP by PGMI till 2007 is 1360. The above facts and figures prove the importance and role of PGMI in training of specialist doctors for the Province as well as the country. It is this training in a structured training program coupled with strict merit criteria that PGMI is considered as a Premier Postgraduate Medical Institution of the country and considered by many other Institutes of the country as a role model to follow.
