CAFTA 6.0
New main GUI
The main GUI of CAFTA has been upgraded. This includes:


Project Workspace
Toolbar buttons were added to the workspace:
- Display and Edit Project or File Properties (depending on selection)
- Add a file
- Delete a file
- Add a folder
Main Document Area
The document views were changed to work as tabbed documents using the new
framework. This includes new features for controlling the tabs, including the user
controls splitting of the tabs into groups.
Data panels
New panels are on the right side of the main document screen. They use automatic features of the
framework, including auto hiding, pinning, grouping, and floating. The panels display information
that changes as the user moves around the tree. The user is able to edit information from there.
Properties Panel
The properties pane will show a property grid for the currently selected item. This will allow
editing of the data, will be a subset of data which can be edited from the normal edit dialogs.
The properties panel will support the following objects:

Fault tree basic events

Fault tree gates

Basic events in cutsets
o

Cutsets
Event tree branches
Event tree sequences
Event tree events.
Gate Tops
When displaying a fault tree, this displays the top gates for the current fault tree file, along
with any true/false state of the gates. Double clicking on the gate and the screen will jump to
that gate.
Parents
When displaying a fault tree, this will display the parent gates for the current event, along
with any true/false state of the gates. Double clicking on the gate will cause the screen to
jump to that gate.
Output panels
At the bottom of the screen are additional panels used for outputs from various CAFTA
processes. Where appropriate, these panels will include the ability to link to the relevant
information. Implemented panels include:

Find Results: This provides the output from the “Find in Files” feature. The find
and replace feature contains a toolbar that allows the user to select various options in
a project allowing them to Find and Replace elements in that project.
Warnings: The Warning tab will show warnings about the current
document. For this version, this includes the tests for circular logic, missing event
basic event data, and module independence
Fault Tree Editor

Fault tree reporting improvements include page numbers of file-based FT
graphics.
Cutset Editor

Cutset description display improvement
Event Tree Editor
Changed to ET-Centric Design where the user builds the model by starting with the event
trees. The two main actions support the linking of ETs to other ETs to support modularly
extending the main ET and to allow the creation of FTs that extend existing branches in the
ET.
ET Branch Linking

You can create a new Fault Tree to link to an Event Tree branch, and link the Event
Tree branch to an existing Fault Tree The user can also modify an existing Event
Tree branch link to perform either of the above functions.

Quantifies individual sequences from event tree editor

Event Tree to Event tree linking and branch linking
o
You can double-click on the desired branch or use the right mouse button. The data
entered here overrides any data entered for the event.
The Event Tree Link Dialog
The ET Sequence Link dialog is used in the same way that the ET Branch and Event dialogs were. The
only significant difference is that each event tree will only have one initiator, so the combo box and radio
group for selecting which initiators to display does not appear.

ET Branch FT Link Icons
When a FT Link is assigned to an ET branch, it is indicated in the ET editor using a
graphical icon that indicates the kind of structure linked to. This is currently limited to
FTs. The icon is the same as the icon used in the Project tree view. The icon is shown
below the branch, to the left of where the branch probability is or would be displayed.

Calculation (more info provided upon request and soon in Knowledge Base Article).
Why your results may be different from previous versions
As computers have become faster, some of the approximations that are inherent in the calculations can be
relaxed and thus the software can provide a more accurate approximation of the true top event probability.
Previous versions of CAFTA relied on the initiator frequency being small, so that the initiator could be
approximated as a probability. In this version of CAFTA, additional calculations are performed to account
for initiator events.
When used with a model that contains initiators, the cutset top event calculation is now factored by the
initiator. The total probability is calculated separately for each initiator, and then the results are added
together to lead to the overall total probability.
When used in typical applications where probabilities are small, you will probably not notice a difference
in the result. However, if your probabilities are large, this can have a noticeable impact. For example,
suppose you have the following cutsets:
C1 = I * A * B
C2 = I * A * C
Where “I” is an initiator, and Freq(I) = .1, P(A) = .2, P(B) = .3, P(C) = .4. The calculation in the previous
version of CAFTA would be:
Freq(Top) = (I * A * B) + (I * A * C) - (I * A * B) * (I * A * C) = .006 + .008 - .006*.008 =
.013952
With the new calculation, this is:
Freq(Top) = I * [(A * B) + (A * C) - (A * B) * (A * C)] = .1 * [.06 + .08 - .06*.08] = .013520
The new calculation is still conservative, but even with these large probabilities the amount of conservatism
has been reduced by only a small amount. With cutsets containing smaller probabilities, the difference in
the results will be less.
In most cases, the new result will be less than the result produced by the previous version of CAFTA. In a
few special cases the result might increase. This will happen, for example, when you have large initiator
frequencies or a large amount of dependence between the cutsets. For example, if you have the following
cutsets:
C1 = I1 * A * B
C2 = I2 * A * C
Where “I1” and “I2” are initiators, and Freq(I1) = .1, Freq(I2) = .1, P(A) = .2, P(B) = .3, P(C) = .4. The
calculation in the previous version of CAFTA would be:
Freq(Top) = (I1 * A * B) + (I2 * A * C) - (I1 * A * B) * (I2 * A * C) = .006 + .008 - .006*.008 = .013952
With the new calculation, this is:
Freq(Top) = I1 * (A * B) + I2 * (A * C) = .006 + .008 = .014000
When using a model that contains only normal Boolean basic events (no initiators), the cutset top-event
calculation will normally lead to the same result as before:
Since the specifics of the calculation have changed a little, it is possible that the results will be slightly
different from the previous version of the software in the 7 th decimal digit.
If your model includes some cutsets that contain an initiator, and some do not, the resulting top event value
is meaningless. To maintain compatibility with previous versions of CAFTA, the total frequency (of the
cutsets containing initiators) is added to the total probability (of the cutsets that do not have initiators).
CAFTA 5.4
Numeric changes
Due to improvements in the calculations, you may get slightly different results than the previous version of
CAFTA in some limited circumstances. This will happen in the following cases:
 The numeric accuracy of the basic event probabilities for calc types 3 and 5 has been
improved when the calculated probability is very small. A small difference (usually in the 4 th
or lower significant digit) will be visible for probabilities less than about 1E-13 for calc type
3, and 1E-7 for calc type 5.

The min-cut calculation uses a more accurate calculation when the top event probability is
very small. You may see a difference in the 4 th or lower significant digit for top event values
between about 1E-11 and 1E-13.

The interface to quantification engines would sometimes lose one bit of precision, causing a
very small difference in the 6th or lower significant digit when compared to earlier versions of
CAFTA. This has been corrected.
Database Editor

Memo fields in the database are now fully supported.

Database field names can now be longer than 10 characters.

Database editor now includes a normal scroll bar when using Microsoft Access format (*.rr)
files.

Variables are now supported in the CCF alpha method, and the CCF report has been
improved.
Fault Tree Editor

The FT cross reference can now be copied to the clipboard from the Group Pages window.

You can now drag an event from the database (or from MSWord) into a fault tree.

Added display options to turn on/off corner clips (improves display speed on large models).

Added new menu item to apply flag files directly, instead of requiring a merge and then
manually setting the flag states.

Fault Tree rate and exposure information will now display only if the calculation type uses
those values.

Added new features to the Style window to set the rounded, thick, and “none” options.

The order of evaluation has been changed to process mutually exclusive events before
recovery rules.
Cutset Editor

Added Browse mode to see the effects of the cutset on the fault tree. See the help file for
more information.
QRecover

Corrected problems in replacing events when the criteria depended on events that were added
in a previous rule.

Added the following new rules:

The **RECOVERY** and **REPLACE EVENTS** rules now support a missing probability
value. In this case, the probability will be obtained from the database.

The **TRUNCATION** rule now has an option to reset to the original truncation value.

The **MISSION TIME EVENTS** rule now supports 15 entries.

Better support for PRAQuant (passes project to the QNT file).

Better integration with DocAssist (handling of the DocAssist database filename).

Project window is processed faster when you have a very large number of fault tree files.

Added support for opening the database as read-only via the API (will be used by future
versions of EOOS, etc.).

Updated the sample databases and templates to Access 2000.
General
Filter support

Better reading of Saphire files (e.g. support of ‘S’ type).

Corrected a problem in reading NUPRA 3.1 files when they contain large sequence numbers
on the first line, and handling of space in top event name.

Now supports RiskSpectrum continuation gates on XOR and COM.

Corrected a problem in reading RiskSpectrum alternate branch names that would rarely cause
CAFTA to think that the tree contained 3-way branches.

Quoted text is now supported in the free format database import/export.
Bug Fixes

Fault tree display would fail (crash) after many screen refreshes. Display was also very slow
(apparent lockup) on certain large fault trees.

Saving the fault tree after PrintToRTF could overwrite caf file with rtf in some cases.

Spurious “Drawing BitBlt Failed” message would show when returning from locking the
computer.

Spurious “database not found” errors would appear after evaluate because of problem in
quantification engine and relative path calculation problems.

Fault tree printout cross-reference table would have entries overlap each other on the last
page.

Drawing of fault tree would skip some horizontal lines when more than 7 levels were
displayed.

CAFTA could crash when generating cutsets with no truncation set (blank value) if no
database is attached to the Fault Tree.

Cutset divider lines would cause the Cutset Editor to operate erratically.

Cutset compress could crash in certain cases.

Fields that exist in BE or GT table and are added as custom fields to the TC table would not
appear in the User Data Custom Fields tab.

<Del> key caused event or description edit box edit to complete.

Basic event edit dialog could give errors messages from validating hidden fields.

Summary info display was counting cutset initiators incorrectly.

Ctrl-Home in Cutset Editor would not go to the top of file in all cases.

CAFTA would not accept a comma "," in equation or direct value when regional settings are
set to European (Spanish) format.
A number of other minor display bugs were also corrected.
CAFTA 5.3
General

The help file is now in the CHM format

The Btrieve driver check now only occurs if you open a Btrieve file. This will allow the
software to run with lower privileges for most users.

Installation now supports isolated assemblies.

You no longer need to perform additional manual steps to install under Vista
Fault Tree Editor

The Extract Subtree function has been changed to create a new fault tree window. This
prevents the problem of inadvertently saving an extracted subtree over top of the original file.

The find dialog now allows you to find by description or any other database field. The find
result will now display correctly if the found event is a basic event input to a collapsed gate.

The software now keeps multiple levels of undo information (default is 5 levels).

Text format flag files are now supported including comment lines.

A new option has been added to allow users to verify that all transfers have been resolved.

The function to apply CCF events to the tree has been changed to operate correctly when a
basic event appears in more than one place in the tree. It also now supports more than 10
events in a group.

Added ability to identify what part of the gate/basic event names represent the system code.

Added an "Auto" configuration to the gate naming scheme, which will make the new gate
system code match the code of the parent gate.

Event "comments" (from the Notes field in the database) are now displayed as corner clips,
and you can view the comments when you mouse over the corner clip.

Added the ability to right click an event and set the style for the event.

Added an expand/collapse box to the display of the tree.

Added the ability to change the standard size of the description boxes.

The find & replace has been updated to support adding characters at the beginning or the end
of a name. For example, you can now change “*” to “*A”.

Evaluate Improvements


Quantification configurations can now be added by simply copying a file from
the quantification engine vendor to the CAFTA application folder.
o
The evaluation process has been expanded to include the ability to set flag files,
recovery rule files, and mutually exclusive files
o
The quantification process now defaults to expanding CCF events
Printing Improvements
o
You now has the ability to copy the currently displayed fault tree view to the
clipboard, by right-clicking on the blank area surrounding a fault tree
o
Copy to clipboard now defaults to Enhanced Metafile (EMF) format instead of
the standard WMF format. The text is now more easily edited in Microsoft
Word. There is also an option to copy as RTF Graphics
o
You now print to RTF from the File->Print to RTF menu item instead of doing a
SaveAs. Writing a file as an RTF format no longer prints random pages when
there are gaps in the page numbers, and prints the pages in the proper order.
o
The ability to integrate fault tree graphics into user reports has been improved
by new options to set the page prefix, starting page number, recognition of the
system prefix, and pagination by system
o

Fixed problems with color output on RTF files, in both RTF graphics and
metafile formats. Improved RTF graphics output for object bounding rectangles
and other technical issues that make it easier to edit the graphics in Word or
Powerpoint.
Other minor improvements
o
Fixed the find dialog so that the find string is not limited to the width of the edit
box.
o
The basic event edit dialog will now allow you to use variables or type codes
that begin with a digit, as long as the variable or type code is defined somewhere
in the database.
o
Made improvements to the operation when adding events to existing
equivalence gates.
o
Problems evaluating a model when the top gate was an XOR have been
corrected.
o
Tab character is no longer allowed in event names.
o
In certain cases the xref pages would all be written onto a single page. This has
been fixed.
o
The standard quantification configuration to will now always remove comment
events independent of the quantification optimization options.

If you are editing a name or description, then switch to another application, upon
return, the text will no longer show an odd font.
o
The current focus no longer jumps to the project window after certain
commands.
o
The summary info screen now shows the counts of gates by gate type.
Cutset Editor

The cutset display has been improved, including better font handling, options to wrap or
unwrap, and new options to display the cutset count, the percent contribution, the cumulative
contribution, and to change the displayed precision.

Improvements have been made that allow for handling much larger cutset files. The
limitations depend on a number of factors, but the typical limit on cutsets has been increased
from about 2 million to about 6 million cutsets.

The cutset files are now handled like documents (same as fault trees), which allows for other
programs such as the FT Browser or PRAQuant to use the cutset files while it is open for
display in the cutset editor. This also prevents problems of the software saving changes
without warning when printing a report or switching modules.

The pie chart display calculation has been improved to factor the results by initiator and to
show a total value. This will lead to slightly different results than the previous version of
CAFTA when using higher probability events.

The ability to apply recovery rules to cutsets after evaluation has been added.

Added a new “filter view” of a set of cutsets, which includes the ability to compare two cutset
files.

Display font name and size is controlled only by the "Normal" font

Display scroll now keeps current event in position to allow for cross-page selections

Other minor Improvements
o
Fixed the find dialog so that the find string is not limited to the width of the edit
box. This enables find operation with more combinations of events

Cutset modules will now be built in the same order as quantified. This will
cause the "default" module to display to be the first module solved.

The cutset importances and piechart windows will no longer fail if the windows
are made too small

Database Editor

The F3 shortcut has been added for Find-Next

Fixed a bug that caused crashes when the database editor was maximized on large screens.

The CCF information can now be stored in a separate CCF table, making it easier to interface
the software to other tools.

The database template has been changed to have proper field widths in the TC table, and the
link fields have been changed to memo type.
Event Tree Editor

Made the link capability work like it does in the Fault Tree Editor. The define and goto links
are removed from the right click menu and are now on the item (event/branch/sequence)
dialog only. You can make multiple links of the same type. The link edit button is no longer
disabled on the sequence dialog.
Project support

The software has been updated to support more than 100 files in the project.

New option allows you to automatically save the project file whenever it changes. This
prevents user from forgetting to save the project file.

The most recently used file list is now separated between project files and other files.

The database purge feature will now create a backup and compact the updated database, if it is
in RR format and is not currently open by another window.
Filter support

The NUPRA filter has been updated to support NUPRA version 3.1 and now correctly loads
external transfer descriptions.
Add-in Support

Add-ins can now install configuration information. This allows you to configure new add-ins
by simply copying the add-in into the proper CAFTA folder (.\addins).

A new method has been added so that add-ins can save and restore undo information.

General

Added AutoSave feature. Will save the file based on a timer. The autosave file will be stored in
the temp directory with the name is <filename><xxxx>.Autosave where xxxx will be a sequential
number. CAFTA will currently provide no direct recovery, but the file can be manually copied.

Display the current opened database on the status bar (FT & CS). Double clicking on the name
will open the database in the editor. Also added a menu item to open the current database.

Added ability to define the component ID encoding on the type code settings dialog.


 In international settings, the software will accept user input as US or the
international format. For any calculated number, the international
format will be used. Note that data entered into the database using an
international format will not be readable on US-only systems. The filters
generally do not use international formats.
Added Alt-Tab to toggle between open windows

Project Changes

Added Project create wizard so that users can create a database and fault tree, and save the
project, in one step.

Combined the File New Project with the File New for Trees, Databases etc.

Allows the user to open an “RR” database file using Microsoft Access. (right click menu).

Now displays the Btrieve databases on one line.
Fault Tree Changes

Replicate subtree. Presents a find and replace like dialog with patterns to use in converting the
currently selected gate to a new subtree. The new gate will be placed next to the original. The
process will stop at any gate which does not match the pattern. It will not create the subtree if
gates will conflict with existing gates in the tree. A warning will be given identifying the problem
gates. If automatic descriptions from the TC information is enabled, new descriptions will be
created.

Copy/paste will also copy the database information when pasting to a tree using a different
database.

The drag and drop will also copy database information.
The merge will also copy database information.

(This is done by making a global copy of the subtree and putting a copy of the
handle on the clipboard under a private format. On the paste this copied subtree
used to merge the tree and the new RDMergeEvent function is used to copy the
database information if the database if different. )


Release Notes
This patch release of CAFTA updates the fault tree API (FTAPI32.DLL). The following issues have
been addressed:
" Basic event data missing when save to an RTF file. The first item shows, but the others do not.
" Drag/copy onto an event when the vertical scroll is at the bottom gets confused. It does not
know that the screen is scrolled, and can drag to the wrong or no event.
" Double basic event symbols do not draw as double. Circle and oval work correctly, but the
others do not.
" If you select a gate from the Show Parents (jump) dialog with a gate index > 32000 will fail
with message "Invalid gate index".
Note: We also added an "Overrun" field under "View / Display". Normally set to1 it lets the user
decides how much extra space CAFTA will display at the bottom of the page. It is counted in halfcell height (a cell being the dashed boxed around a Basic Event). This was intended for users for
do not want to use dynamic paging and would like to see more of the tree on one single page.
Maximum is 99 (approximately 50 cells) which often displays the whole tree on one page. (The
vertical scroll bar allows to see the tree on one page).
CAFTA 5.1a Changes
(#2520) - In Cutset Description report, rate may be incorrect.
(#2525) - Fixed problem with old databases that do not contain an EQUATION field. If the
database does not contain the EQUATION field, the BE edit dialog will incorrectly detect this and
change the calculation type to equation.
Changes for CAFTA version 5.1

Cutset editor display problems were causing "find" to find the position the cursor to the
wrong point (#2412), the scroll position to change during screen refreshes, and the cursor to
sometimes think it was on a different event than it was actually on.

In certain cases, the fault tree would print too far to the left of the page (#2044) or too high
on the page (#2046, #2383). For wide trees, such as printing the entire tree on one page,
random lines would appear. Also, decreased the inner margin to make the tree use the available
page space better.

Corrected a risk of losing data by incorrectly saving to an RTF file (#2421)

Fault tree display issues:

In fault tree printouts, changed "Drawing number" to "Page Number". Also, if page
numbers are not set, the page label is no longer output ("Page ")

When using a metafile version of the event tree (e.g. paste to Word), multi-line text now
wraps correctly.
Corrected bug where if you load the branch probabilities, and the database was in an Access
format, then subsequent tree edits would fail.

Probability field now shows in a gray background, and improved error messages

Database table display now supports the <del> key to delete the current cell value. The Ctrlend combination moves to the last row, but no longer goes to the last column of the table.

The database table no longer scrolls so fast, so that you can scroll up or down a single line.


Calculations

Basic event factor field and type code rate field can contain a "variable" name instead of a
value. The variable name is a value stored in the type code table. For example, if a set of
equipment has the same test interval, you can set the factor field to "PMPTEST", and add
PMPTEST to the TC table, placing the test interval into the "rate" field. Or, if you have a common
mission time, you can set "MT" into the factor field, and define the mission time in the TC table.

A new field can be added to the Type Code table ("V") that if set to a value of "V" indicates
a variable instead of a regular component type. This is just used to help the user distinguish
between these two uses.

Added new units "S" for seconds and "I" for minutes.

There are three new calculation types:

"+" meaning always "true"

"-" meaning always "false"

"=" meaning use the equation field

General Changes

32-bit. All programs are now full 32-bit programs. This includes:

Support for long file names

32-bit common dialog, so when selecting files to open you can:

improved memory management and smoother multitasking

Installation. The installation program now includes the ability to uninstall the software.
Also, you are not prompted where to install the shared files. These files will be installed in
"c:\program files\r&r\common files". This default location can only be changed by an
administrator.

ODBC Databases. The reliability database can now be stored in a Microsoft Access or
ODBC (e.g. Oracle) database format. Microsoft Access (97) is now the standard format. The old
Btrieve database can still be created and used. The sample files are now configured using an
Access database.

The GTPROB tool for calculating probabilities of all of the gates is now part of the standard
application package. It is no longer an optional add-on.

Templates. When creating a new fault tree, cutset file, or database, you can now select a
template for the new file. This allows you to save common settings (e.g. font size, colors, display
options, truncation probability, database fields) to be applied to every new file you create. The
templates can also include data. For example, the database template can contain generic
industry data that is to be used on each new project; or several fault tree templates can be
created representing standard subsystems that are used over an over again.

Tip of the day. When starting up, the applications now provide tips for how to get more
out of the software without reading the manual.

The recently-used file list has been increased from 4 to 8 items.

Toolbars are now dockable.

Recently used files information is now kept by user in the windows directory rather than in
the global cafta.ini.

The quantification tools now have a windows user interface instead of a scrolling command
line display.
Data Changes

The database now configured to support override type codes. That is, in addition to
automatically extracting a type code name from character positions in the basic event name, you
can explicitly assign any character string as a type code for a basic event.

The database now configured to support override rate values. That is, you can explicitly
assign a failure rate to a basic event without using a type code value from the type code data
table. This support now also includes support for uncertainty information for this failure rate.
(note: uncertainly coupling can not be correctly calculated when using override rates)

The database now supports equations. This allows you to define a probability for a basic
event by using an equation. The equation can use any record in the basic event or type code
database as inputs. (note: the optional UNCERT tool does not support equations).

The standard data dialog box has been totally reworked so that drop-down lists are
available to select calculation type, symbol types, units, distributions, etc. The prompts on the
dialog now automatically adjust based on the user's selections. The calculated probability is now
updated as you make selections and enter values.

The database now configured to support links. The link user interface has been reworked
to allow any number of links of any type.
Fault Tree Editor

Gate inputs and several other gate attributes (e.g. true/false state, pagination options) are
available when you double click on a gate event.

Maximum number of gates and basic events has been increased from 32,000 to
2,000,000,000 (effectively constrained by available memory)

True/false events are processed while you edit the tree. Previously, the true/false
propagation was only calculated when you set an event to true or false. Now if you change a
gate type or perform other edits of the tree, the true/false propagation will be recalculated.

The toolbar now includes buttons for adding new events to the left, right, or below the
current event.

When changing a basic event to a gate, you are now prompted for a gate type and a
number of inputs. Previously, CAFTA would always default to a two-input AND gate.

The toolbar now includes buttons for find, event properties, and calculate.

The initiator (arrow) symbol is now on the pop-up dialog when you click on a basic event
symbol.

There is a new Tools/Basic Event Data check that allows you to find all basic events that do
not yet have data defined.
Cutset Editor

The memory management has been improved. Although the limit on the number of
cutsets is 2,000,000,000, memory configuration limitations would decrease the effective limit to
about 100,000, no matter how much memory was available. The software has been successfully
tested with more than 800,000 cutsets using about 64Mb of memory.
Database Editor

The database editing now occurs on the actual database file. Previously, the database
editor would work on a copy of the file, which would prevent you from using the fault tree editor
and database editor at the same time on the same data. This change removes the "save" and
"save as" menu items, as changes now occur immediately in the database.

The toolbar now includes buttons for find, event properties, and filter.
Filters

The CAF3/CUT3 filters are now the default save format, where appropriate

The NUPRA database filter can now read both DOS and Windows versions of NUPRA files.

The free format filter can now read FTP files (including combination gates)

The RTF fault tree filter can now include page numbers in the output.

There is a new filter for the windows version of Risk Spectrum. This filter will also create
the event tree sequence logic and process boundary condition flags.

The user can now add link data for gates and basic events. Link data stipulates another
file (perhaps using another application) where further information is contained about the

Link data is saved in the reliability database; thus the same links can be used in both
fault tree and cutest files (requires that a LINK field exists in the database).
The Goto Link option under the tools menu allows the user to launch the file link to the
current event.
