The Topics
1. Transportation and Communications:
Search for information and pictures on the main types of transportation for Canadians and
Americans in the 20's and 30's. Particular topics that should be covered include, but are not
limited to:
- Cars and trucks - Trains - Types and uses of airplanes - ocean transportation
- local and long distance communications
2.Prohibition:
Find out all about prohibition in Canada. Where did it take place (Make a map!)? How
was it smuggled? Who were the main Canadian smugglers? How did Canadian police try to stop
smuggling? Also cover any related crimes.
3. Economic Boom and Problems: start with Text Section 4.2
Find pictures and descriptions of what work was like in the 1920's. Find pictures of
factories and factory workers, people working in stores and businesses, and farm families. How
much did people get paid? Did anyone ever go on strike? How hard was the work? You may
want to check out a book on the history of Brockville to learn about local businesses.
4. Sports, Entertainment, and the Arts: start with Text Section 4.3
Find out about Canadian and American entertainment, and Canadian sports (not
American!!). Look for information and pictures on:
- movies and movie stars (Some big ones were Canadian)
- Home entertainment (Magazines, radios, records)
- Professional and Olympic sports (particularly the 1928 Olympics)
- Other ways to entertain oneself ( local sports and games, etc.)
5. Political Parties and Politics: start with Text Section 4.5
Sounds boring but this challenging topic covers a very revolutionary period in Canadian
politics. Lots of new parties are formed, join together, fail, or succeed throughout the boom and
bust times of the 20's.
6. On the Outside: start with Text Section 4.4
We see the rich and famous in everything, what about those not in the movies, Olympics,
or Houses of Parliament? Find pictures and information on what the minorities are doing
throughout the ‘roaring twenties’ . The daily people, the people most effected by economic
changes, are your topic. Women, children, ethnic minorities, the poor, regional problems
7. Canada and the World: start with Text Section 4.6
How do Canada’s relations with Britain, the USA, and other countries change in the
1920's? Do we gain or lose international respect? Do we sign any major treaties or make any
major agreements. This topic starts with Resolution IX and the Treaty of Versailles negotiations
and ends with the Treaty of Westminster in 1930?
8. How average people lived:
The 1920's were supposed to be a “good time” for most Canadians and Canadian families.
What’s the evidence for this? In what ways was life getting better for average Canadians in the
1920's? What were typical jobs and wages like? Were living standards improving?
What would typical homes be like? What new consumer goods could you buy? What were
fashions like? In what ways was life better than in the 1900's and 1910's?
