Required Criteria for application:

Superior academic achievement

A demonstrated commitment to community and public service

Willing to accept work assigned to interns which will involve the practical application of what is learned in the
classroom

Willingness to take on assigned tasks and work hard

Is a matriculating student during the internship

Has not accumulated more than 120 credit semester units or 180 credit quarter units

Has not taken part in the program in previous years

Has exemplary maturity and leadership abilities

Has demonstrated ability to be a good team member

Has excellent English written and oral skills, and clarity of speech appropriate for constituent phone calls and visits

Is willing to live in assigned group housing with other interns during the entire program

Is willing to submit a written essay stating the reasons for her/his interest in the Panetta Institute’s Congressional
Internship Program, and one of the student’s graded papers to ensure excellent English language proficiency

Enrollment at CSUMB in junior or senior year at the time when the program begins at the Panetta Institute for the
fall term

No additional course enrollment outside the Congressional Internship Program including preparation courses for
or scheduling of LSAT, MCAT, GRE, or other graduate school exams, nor are special preparations for other tests
allowed

Students must be able and willing to participate fully in the Congressional Internship Program and not be involved
in any other employment or pursuit of employment

Registration at CSUMB for the fall term, either junior or senior year, concurrent with the Congressional Internship
Program – this is a credit-based program. No audits are allowed and students may not have graduated prior to the
internship.

A student who has never been sanctioned under the California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Article 2 (Student
Discipline), Section 41301

U.S. Citizenship


At the time of the personal interview, is able to provide proof of health insurance that is compliant with the
Affordable Care Act and covers the student while residing in Washington, D.C.

Willing to undergo a background investigation

In addition, students are expected to:

make a total commitment to the program;

work full-time in a congressional office;

submit a brief weekly report to the Panetta Institute;

maintain a journal;

attend required seminars in Washington, D.C. (arranged by the Panetta Institute);

and write a twenty-page research paper.
2015 Panetta Congressional Internship Program Application Process:
1. The applicant must meet the criteria for application.
2. The student must complete and submit the Student Application Form below (page 3) and must submit the
following supplemental materials:
 Official copy of transcripts – Ordered online through the National Student Clearinghouse. Ordering
information for official transcripts can be found at: http://ar.csumb.edu/site/x4674.xml. Please take
care of this as early as possible as it can take some time for the official transcripts to be sent.
 Two letters of recommendation from CSUMB faculty, staff, or administrators
 A written essay explaining why you are interested in the Congressional Internship Program
 A copy of a graded paper that is at least three pages long to ensure excellent English language
proficiency
 Resume
Applications must be completed and submitted to the Office of Student Life in Sand Hall (Bldg 8), Attention:
Allison Gonzales by: 5:00 pm, February 17, 2016. When you drop off your application, you will receive a
copy of the Congressional Internship Program Position Description for your review.
Applications will be reviewed by a broad-based, campus committee; interviews will be conducted;
recommendations will go to the President for review and interview. The President will make a
recommendation to the Panetta Institute for their consideration and interview prior to a final selection for the
program.
PLEASE NOTE: The student chosen by the campus president will have to complete a Live Scan
Fingerprinting for final approval requirement of the Panetta Institute.

in length)



A graded paper showing English language proficiency (minimum of three pages in length)

A resume of no more than two pages

