ROLE OF DEPARTMENT To provide a managed training facility which leads in the development and delivery of sick patient and resuscitation training programmes to multidisciplinary team (MDT) staff within FVRH, and externally by developing reciprocal relationships through collaborating with other agencies, boards and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). 5. DIMENSIONS The post holder will be based in the Learning Centre at FVRH and will be the LRO in a team of two ROs who will provide management of sick patient training and resuscitation training for the MDT staff in FV. 6. KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Management Lead and manage the resuscitation department and any other staff within it. Take a lead clinical and management role in the development and provision of sick patient and resuscitation training services. Provide specialist knowledge, education and training with the aim of improving clinical practise and patient care. Provide high quality training in the areas of recognition and treatment of acute life threatening events, basic, immediate and advanced life support, for staff involved with direct patient care e.g. Medical and Nursing staff and AHPs. Co-ordinates the care and purchase of resuscitation equipment in order that equipment is standardised with FV to ensure patient safety and staff familiarity in various emergency situations. Monitors the appropriateness of the areas requiring resuscitation equipment, evaluating new or alternative equipment and making recommendations for any changes to the resuscitation committee. Audits and reviews resuscitation procedures, practices and equipment according to local and national guidelines. Successfully plans and organises courses, assess the competence of candidates and keeps accurate computerised records of these in keeping with data protection guidelines. Provides advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in the role of Course Director for nationally approved RCUK courses, once this status is obtained. Maintains own clinical skills and competence in acute situations and resuscitation skills. Is an active clinical member of the cardiac arrest team, providing advanced patient assessment and treatment, as well as providing expert advice and guidance in cardiac arrest management. Develops reciprocal relationships to support training in FV by engaging with external agencies, boards and HEIs. 7. The post holder must have expert knowledge in the working of: Automated external defibrillators. Defibrillators and cardiac monitors / external pacers. Suction apparatus. Basic resuscitation manikins. Advanced computer assisted resuscitation manikins. Computer aided presentation equipment and slide projectors. Medical gasses equipment. Anatomical models in use within clinical simulation. And a working knowledge of : Moving and handling equipment, including hoists and patient slides. Intravenous infusion devices and syringe drivers. Other equipment - for example: oxygen humidifiers, oxygen and piped gases, nebulisers, portable and piped suction. Desktop PC, printer and photocopier. The post-holder will be trained and required to maintain expertise in the use of the following systems: Maintain accurate records in accordance to NMC and Forth Valley NHS guidelines. Work within NHS Forth Valley and departmental policies, procedures and protocols. Use systems for risk identification, reporting and management, and for dealing with complaints. The use, maintenance and storage of equipment and systems 8. SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK The post holder will be expected to make autonomous decisions on a daily basis. This role requires flexibility from the post holder so as to develop, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate training programmes that will often be driven by the needs of various FV MDT members, as well as policy / guideline changes, be they local or national. Flexibility is also required as a great proportion of the work includes planning programmes and scheduling up to a year in advance. These planned programmes may also take the form of specific requests from MDT members throughout FV e.g. Physiotherapist staff training days. Training programmes vary from managing sick patients to basic, immediate and advanced life support depending on the staff requiring training, so expertise in assessing group needs is required. Where any training has income generation potential, this will necessitate the post holder liaising with the finance department and clients to ensure correct invoicing. FVRH is an accredited centre with the RCUK and national courses must be run on site in accordance with their guidelines. Other courses and training must also follow appropriate guidelines. The post holder will be expected to make clinical and managerial decisions on all aspects of the department, acting independently and using their own initiative to ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of the service within their sphere of responsibility. The post holder will be expected to recognise where they require assistance, support or guidance from the Lead Nurse, Service Manager, Chair of the Resuscitation Committee, Department of Nursing, or other departments / professionals. 9. The post holder will be expected to promote good relationships with patients, the public and staff across FV in all verbal and written communication. The post holder will actively listen and seek patient staff and, at times, the public’s opinions on aspects care delivery. The post holder must maintain patient and staff confidentiality at all times. The post holder will be expected to communicate with various people within the MDT and beyond, on a daily basis. 10a. COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB The post holder could be mobile for much of their working day although there will be periods, sometimes long periods, of sitting at a desk in front of a computer. Moving and transporting patients could be required. Resuscitation and other training requires constant movement and bending during demonstrations and teaching sessions. Training manikins vary in size and weight, which may require transportation throughout FV, so knowledge of moving and handling techniques are required to ensure safety. Given the post holder will be a member of the cardiac arrest team, they will be expected to have the physical ability and fitness to respond to and attend emergencies anywhere in FVRH or the hospital grounds. As a member of the cardiac arrest team the post holder may be involved in lengthy resuscitation events requiring sustained physical effort which may be in confined spaces or awkward positions. The post holder may have to travel to other hospital sites or external agencies. The post holder may have to manage physically aggressive patients and/or relatives. Reflecting on own practise and changing practice accordingly will be required. High levels of concentration are required when observing staff and patient behaviours that may be unpredictable. Supporting staff in their work environment during and after resuscitation attempts could be stressful. Being involved with acutely ill patients before and after resuscitation attempts could be stressful. Being involved in various clinical emergencies will be stressful and emotional.
