Resuscitation Service in NHS Forth Valley.
The successful candidate will have a nursing qualification and more than 5
year post qualifying experience. It is essential that the successful applicant is
a UK Resuscitation Council ALS Instructor, with up to date certification. In
addition the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate experience
clinical skills and simulated role playing scenarios. Excellent organisational

JOB PURPOSE
The LRO will manage and lead the resuscitation department by developing,
maintaining and providing appropriate training for staff with patient care
responsibilities in Forth Valley (FV); including Medical and Nursing staff and
Allied Health Professionals (AHPs). The LRO will also play an active clinical
and advisory role within the cardiac arrest team whenever possible.

ROLE OF DEPARTMENT
To provide a managed training facility which leads in the development and
delivery of sick patient and resuscitation training programmes to
multidisciplinary team (MDT) staff within FVRH, and externally by developing
reciprocal relationships through collaborating with other agencies, boards and
Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

DIMENSIONS
The post holder will be based in the Learning Centre at FVRH and will be the
LRO in a team of two ROs who will provide management of sick patient
training and resuscitation training for the MDT staff in FV.

KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Management
Lead and manage the resuscitation department and any other staff within it.
Take a lead clinical and management role in the development and provision of
sick patient and resuscitation training services.
Provide specialist knowledge, education and training with the aim of improving
clinical practise and patient care.
Provide high quality training in the areas of recognition and treatment of acute
life threatening events, basic, immediate and advanced life support, for staff
involved with direct patient care e.g. Medical and Nursing staff and AHPs.
Manage and develop innovative approaches to delivering training e.g. online
forms of training, involving other professionals in wider staff education and
develop a cascade training system for BLS updates.
Ensure that all training is evidence based and consistent with national policies
and/or Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) guidelines.
Develops, implements and monitors local resuscitation related policies and
protocols.
Be an expert source of advice and support on all aspects of resuscitation and
sick patient management.
Ensure a system of clinical audit is in place to monitor cardiac arrests and
report the results to the Resuscitation Committee, while maintaining patient
confidentiality and in keeping with data protection guidelines.
Co-ordinate and manage the standardisation of FVRH’s resuscitation
equipment to enhance patient safety and to facilitate more efficient responses
to various emergency situations.
Monitor resuscitation equipment across FVRH in regard to its location and
whether it is fit for purpose.
Develops reciprocal partnerships with other agencies and teams across Forth
Valley, regionally and nationally to create a network of support for individual
and group training, education and development.
Communication
Communicates effectively with patients, carers and members of the MDT and
management teams.
Communicates effectively across the organisation and out with at all levels
Ensures accurate record keeping of training sessions attendance via
database and reports attendance figures to ward managers and unit
managers
Ensures accurate record keeping of cardiac arrest events via database and
reports findings to the Resuscitation Committee.
Communicates complex training information and imparts knowledge to
various groups and sizes of groups in a formal classroom setting.
Produces and gives presentations and lectures in training, at meetings and
conferences in FV, and externally at other agencies.
Develops educational material according to national guidelines.














Develops high level interpersonal and communication skills required to
function in an autonomous roles and in sensitive situations e.g. breaking bad
news to relatives in the event of death in adults or children.
Supports and counsels cardiac arrest team members by debriefing after
successful or unsuccessful resuscitation attempts.
Forms and maintains links with external agencies to enhance and support the
role e.g. The British Heart Foundation, Heartstart programs, The Scottish
Resuscitation Group, RCUK, HEIs and NHS Education Scotland.
Quality improvement
Identifies opportunities to develop and improve services for patient and client
groups, using clinical audit and research to ensure that practice is evidence
based, involving patients and staff in evaluation and development wherever
and whenever possible.
Ensures that high standards of cleanliness of manikins and resuscitation area
are maintained and policies for the control of infection implemented.
Assesses and manages risk responsibly, ensuring the safety of the work
environment and work processes, for patients, staff and visitors.
Collaborates with clinical and management teams in service reviews, strategic
planning and managing change processes by providing expert knowledge on
clinical training, resuscitation issues and equipment.
Learning, teaching and personal development
Assesses resuscitation learning needs within FVRH then develops and
implements plans to meet those needs, in partnership with other departments
boards and external agencies such as HEIs.
Researches, develops, implements and evaluates resuscitation and sick
patient training programmes for MDT staff with patient contact responsibilities
within FV.
Supports a culture of continuing professional development and competence
by encouraging and participating in ongoing training and education locally and
nationally.
Ensures that mandatory and statutory training needs are met.

Speciality and role specific responsibilities
Leads in the provision of specialist education and training for the management
of sick adult patients as well as basic, immediate and advanced adult life
support / resuscitation.
Leads in ensuring the provision of specialist education and training in basic
and advanced paediatric resuscitation.
Monitors all resuscitation equipment in place within FV and acts as a resource
for operational and safety issues relating to its use.
Co-ordinates the care and purchase of resuscitation equipment in order that
equipment is standardised with FV to ensure patient safety and staff familiarity
in various emergency situations.
Monitors the appropriateness of the areas requiring resuscitation equipment,
evaluating new or alternative equipment and making recommendations for any
changes to the resuscitation committee.
Audits and reviews resuscitation procedures, practices and equipment
according to local and national guidelines.
Successfully plans and organises courses, assess the competence of
candidates and keeps accurate computerised records of these in keeping with
data protection guidelines.
Provides advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in the role of Course
Director for nationally approved RCUK courses, once this status is obtained.
Maintains own clinical skills and competence in acute situations and
resuscitation skills.
Is an active clinical member of the cardiac arrest team, providing advanced
patient assessment and treatment, as well as providing expert advice and
guidance in cardiac arrest management.
Develops reciprocal relationships to support training in FV by engaging with
external agencies, boards and HEIs.

Automated external defibrillators.
Defibrillators and cardiac monitors / external pacers.
Suction apparatus.
Basic resuscitation manikins.
Advanced computer assisted resuscitation manikins.
Computer aided presentation equipment and slide projectors.
Medical gasses equipment.
Anatomical models in use within clinical simulation.
And a working knowledge of :
Moving and handling equipment, including hoists and patient slides.
Intravenous infusion devices and syringe drivers.
Other equipment - for example: oxygen humidifiers, oxygen and piped gases,
nebulisers, portable and piped suction.
Desktop PC, printer and photocopier.
The post-holder will be trained and required to maintain expertise in the
use of the following systems:
Maintain accurate records in accordance to NMC and Forth Valley NHS
guidelines.

SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK
The post holder will be expected to make autonomous decisions on a daily
basis.
This role requires flexibility from the post holder so as to develop, co-ordinate,
deliver and evaluate training programmes that will often be driven by the
needs of various FV MDT members, as well as policy / guideline changes, be
they local or national.
Flexibility is also required as a great proportion of the work includes planning
programmes and scheduling up to a year in advance. These planned
programmes may also take the form of specific requests from MDT members
throughout FV e.g. Physiotherapist staff training days.






Training programmes vary from managing sick patients to basic, immediate
and advanced life support depending on the staff requiring training, so
expertise in assessing group needs is required.
Where any training has income generation potential, this will necessitate the
post holder liaising with the finance department and clients to ensure correct
invoicing.
FVRH is an accredited centre with the RCUK and national courses must be
run on site in accordance with their guidelines.
Other courses and training must also follow appropriate guidelines.
The post holder will be expected to make clinical and managerial decisions on
all aspects of the department, acting independently and using their own
initiative to ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of the service within their
sphere of responsibility.
The post holder will be expected to recognise where they require assistance,
support or guidance from the Lead Nurse, Service Manager, Chair of the
Resuscitation Committee, Department of Nursing, or other departments /
professionals.

COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
The post holder could be mobile for much of their working day although there
will be periods, sometimes long periods, of sitting at a desk in front of a
computer.
Moving and transporting patients could be required.
Resuscitation and other training requires constant movement and bending
during demonstrations and teaching sessions.
Training manikins vary in size and weight, which may require transportation
throughout FV, so knowledge of moving and handling techniques are required
to ensure safety.
Given the post holder will be a member of the cardiac arrest team, they will be
expected to have the physical ability and fitness to respond to and attend
emergencies anywhere in FVRH or the hospital grounds.
As a member of the cardiac arrest team the post holder may be involved in
lengthy resuscitation events requiring sustained physical effort which may be
in confined spaces or awkward positions.
The post holder may have to travel to other hospital sites or external agencies.
The post holder may have to manage physically aggressive patients and/or
relatives.



Working Conditions:
Exposure to body fluids during resuscitation attempts could occur on a daily
basis
Exposure to verbal / physical aggression could occur on a daily basis.
Exposure to lone working environments, including in the out of hours hospital
environment will be required.

Mental demands
Formulation, retention and communication of knowledge and information.
Counselling, supporting and managing staff during stressful training
sessions/courses and assessment will be expected.
Counselling, supporting and managing staff patients or relatives during
stressful resuscitation attempts will be required.
Reflecting on own practise and changing practice accordingly will be required.
High levels of concentration are required when observing staff and patient
behaviours that may be unpredictable.
Balancing the clinical and managerial roles, prioritising and meeting competing
demands from members of the MDT and outside agencies, will be demanding

£30,764 - £40,558 per annum
Staff taking up a new appointment with NHS Forth
Valley will normally enter the scale at the minimum
of the pay band/range. Any appointments above
the lowest point of the pay band/range will be
subject to verification of previous NHS service, or
experience outside the NHS, which is given in
recognition of relevant complete years of
experience.
