Murmansk Marine Biological Institute of the Kola Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences invites you to participate in the International scientific Conference “Arctic marine management in XXI century - modern scientific balance between tradition and innovation (dedicated to 80-years anniversary of the MMBI KSC RAS)”, that will be held during celebration of the Institute’s 80th anniversary in Murmansk on the 25-27th of March 2015. History of the Institute dates back to the second half of the XIX century, when St. Petersburg naturalists’ society the first Marine biological station in Russia was organized on Solovetsky Islands of the White Sea in 1881. At the end of the XIX century biological station is transferred closer to the Arctic – in Aleksandrovsk port (now it’s called Polyarny) of Catherine Kola Bay harbor. Murmansk biological station in Zelenetskaya Bay on the East Murman was created by the Academy of Sciences by decree of the USSR Council of People’s Commissars (№ 501-50 dated 10 March 1935). In 1958 it was reorganized into Murmansk Marine Biological Institute. Since then basic researches are developing: marine geology and paleogeography, plankton biology, benthos, fish fauna, marine birds and mammals. In 1989 MMBI headed by academician Matishov G.G. was transferred to Murmansk. The first Oceanariun in the north of Russia was opened on the base of the MMBI in 1992 – it’s modern scientific and educational complex and at the same time experimental base for experts in the fields of physiology, ethology and marine animal psychology. The Institute carries out extensive field studies in the field of anthropogenic ocean ecology, including nuclear contamination. Oceanography and Southern Seas biology department (in Rostov-on-Don) was organized in 1998, and in 2001 – Azov branch of the MMBI. MMBI creates captive marine arctic seals complex in the Saida Bay of the Barents Sea and in Polyarny in 2000-2007. Year-round maintenance of pinnipeds in marine complexes allows conducting unique experimental study. MMBI maintains and actively uses Dalnie Zelentsy, Franz-Josef Land and Spitsbergen stations. MMBI is one of the largest research centers for the Arctic study and exploration. Theoretical and practical issues associated with the Arctic study will be discussed on the anniversary conference. KEYNOTE TOPICS OF THE CONFERENCE: 1. Population, communities and ecosystem dynamics and evolution under condition of global climatic change and anthropogenic pressure; 2. species diversity and productivity in biotic systems; 3. rational environmental management and protecting of marine environment; 4. biocenosis preservation and restoration in high latitudes; 5. modern researches in the field of marine geology and paleoecology; 6. oceanographic processes in the Arctic seas; 7. history and contemporary issues of marine research expeditions in the Arctic; 8. anthropogenic ecology of the Arctic region.
