CONSTITUTION of the COLLEGE OF ALAMEDA’S
GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE
ARTICLE 1: NAME: GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE
PURPOSE: The purpose of a Gay-Straight Alliance is to provide a safe place for LGBT, Straight, and
Questioning students and staff of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations/gender identities, and creeds to
meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation, to foster diversity, and work to end
homophobia, and prejudice against GLBT people. This group is open to all students and supportive staff.
The COA GSA hopes to become a community-creating support system to help assist COA students,
faculty, and staff in acquiring essential life skills as a GLBT person, and to have access to information
about local resources for GLBT people. The GSA intends to emphasize issues, gifts, and qualities found the
multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, muti-racial diversity of the GLBT community.
ARTICLE 2: Membership is open to all currently enrolled students at the College of Alameda, with
current COA student I.D.s. Meetings will be held on the COA campus, and are open to any official of the
college or of the COA Student Association. Faculty and staff of the college are welcome to attend meetings
to support the club. All activities must have a faculty sponsor present. This club will be a member of the
Inter-Club Council and send official representative(s). This club also intends to affiliate with the national
Gay-Straight Network of Alliances found on campuses. The club also plans to collaborate with other
PCCD GSAs.
ARTICLE 3: Club officers will be elected annually, and must maintain a minimum of 2.0 grade point
average. The club officers will consist of President, Vice-President, and Secretary/Treasurer, and two
Faculty Sponsors. The club will become a member of the Inter-Club Council, and send a representative (i.e.
the President, or her representative) to the council. For all social activities one of the club faculty sponsors,
or their faculty representative will be present.
ARTICLE 4 : No dues above student fees will be collected. Donations gratefully accepted. All funds
will be charged to, or credited to the club’s account. There will be no initiation activities, or hazing as
stated in Section 10851, 10852, and 10853 of the Education Code of the State of California.
ARTICLE 5: The Constitution can only be amended by majority vote. A quorum of members must be
present to change the constitution, and, in accordance with the Brown Act, a notice must be given at a
meeting at least two weeks previous to any such vote.
ARTICLE 6: The GSA will meet every two weeks, on campus.
ARTICLE 7 & 8: A Board of Directors, Executive Council, means of selection and
Standing Committee will be discussed and created as the need arises.
