Fourth Sunday of Advent ~ Love
Saturday
St Peter Canisus, priest & doctor
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say rejoice. Indeed, the Lord is near
Come Lord, and save us.
It is the Lord who preserves fidelity forever, who does justice to those who are oppressed.
It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord who sets prisoners free.
It is the Lord who opens the eyes of the blind, the Lord who raises up those who are bowed down.
It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord who protects the stranger.
The Lord upholds the orphan and the widow, but thwarts the path of the wicked.
The Lord will reign forever, the God of Sion from age to age.
Come Lord, and save us.
Alleluia, alleluia!
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has sent me to preach good news to the poor . Alleluia!
Say to the faint of heart: Be strong and do not fear. Behold, our God will come, and he will save us.

The St Vincent de Paul Society starts its annual CHRISTMAS STARS project for helping underprivileged children at Wylie House, St Theresa’s Children’s Home and Streetwise from
SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER 2013 and for the next few Sundays after that. Please give a child a gift this Christmas by taking a star off the Christmas tree at the back of the Church which will have the name of a specific child at one of the homes together with the school shoes required.
Members of the SVDP will be in the Parish hall after all Masses from Sunday 24 November and throughout Advent to sell the SCHOOL SHOES which correspond to these Christmas stars at only R70.00
per pair. You can purchase your shoes, wrap them at home and securely attach the Star with the child’s details on it .
Some of the stars on the tree will be for clothes needed as well for the Homes - girls’ pyjamas and boys’ white school shirts, grey long trousers and school socks. In the case of the clothes, the SVDP will not be selling these this year so if you could buy these and then please bring the wrapped clothes/shoes with the corresponding stars attached back to Mass the following Sunday and place in the box provided at the back of the Church by Sunday 15 th
December or drop at the Parish office .
Also from Sunday 24 November the SVDP will be selling the CHRISTMAS BUCKETS for the 90 families at Ottawa which will be distributed to them in December. SVDP have made it easy for you and you can donate R130,00 for one of these Christmas buckets which the SVDP will prefill with the required food and other goodies which includes rice, sugar, beans, tea, soup, pilchards, jam and a whole lot more (the actual cost to buy the contents is R137.00 per bucket).
So, PLEASE don’t forget the poor this Christmas by making a difference and support your St
Vincent de Paul Society to help those in need on your behalf!

Commentary
Joe Cullen, OP
First Reading (Is 35:1-6)
Previously, Isaiah has been dealing with the fearful fate of Edom, in all its vengeful and gory details
– ‘the Lord has a sword, it is sated in blood.’
Now the text moves to a more positive emphasis on the wonderful future awaiting the people of God. The author is not thinking about the return of the people from the Babylonian captivity but of a wider homecoming of all the Jews of the Diaspora. Here we are introduced to the theme of
‘a second or new exodus’ expressed in terms of fertility, lavish growth and flourishing vegetation.
Lebanon, Carmel and Sharon were immediately identifiable as such areas of abundance and fertility. All of this accompanies the key event of the coming of God to his people with all of its restorative and healing outcomes.
Gospel (Mt 11:2-11)
Imprisoned by Herod, the Baptist is puzzled by news of the healing and liberating ministry of Jesus and his disciples when he (John) had foretold the coming of a fiery figure initiating the final judgment. Matthew wants to show that the peak of Christ’s ministry was not the healings or even the raising of the dead, but the preaching of good news to the poor. In this way Christ fulfils the prophecy in Isaiah that the time of salvation has arrived. Yet Christ can indeed point to these other extraordinary happenings as signs of the immanence of the kingdom. To
‘lose faith in me’ (v.6) is to look elsewhere for fulfilment of our own expectations rather than accepting the one who has come. The reference to ‘fine clothes’ such as that worn at the court of Herod, underlines the moral and religious bankruptcy of such earthly powers. John’s power comes from his role as one who is unique among the prophets – he is allowed to see the beginning of the actualisation of the messianic times. However, Christians by their commitment to Christ in discipleship are also uniquely blessed. They are living in the realisation of the kingdom of God and its arrival in the person of Christ.
Fatima Youth will be visiting the Angela Dube's House, tomorrow, Monday 16 December, for a Christmas Party at the orphanage!
If there are any Youth who are keen to make the Children’s Christmas special, just bring yourselves and we will meet at 8.00am at the Church.
