Born in New York, but arrived as a 6 year old in Ellis Island, NY on Oct 18, 1893 from Bremen, Germany as a US
citizen on the ship named Havel9. Arrived with all German born Luhrs family [Martin 59, Anna 59, Anna 27,
Charga/Marga (possibly Aunt Margaret Degenhardt) 21, Hinrich 15, Otto 16] 9 He therefore went to Germany after

Misc. Notes
In 1995, Alyce Schlech wrote:
“It seems to me there was a Henry Schlech who lived in Bayonne that was a cousin. When I bought our first car for
$85 (when Dad and I started going together) we took the car to him to be checked over; he made sure the steering
wheel was OK.
“I thing the mother of Fred Schlech had a candy store in NY years ago. She also lived with a Mr. Genero, like a
tenement house. I visited her once when I was keeping company with Dad [Howie]. We went with Nana and Pa
[Fred and Lillian]. I know Pa Schlech [Fred] used to send money to her every month for years. She might have
come to America as a widow. I know nothing about Fred’s father. Mr. Genero made spaghetti and he was
connected in some way with the ships. One time we all visited a ship [well-known] that came in the NY harbor.
Mr. Genero showed us around. That’s where Nana Schlech [Lillian] learned how to make Italian spaghetti
Misc. Notes

NY (S420, Vol 192, Record 183); Former nationality = Emperor Germany; Witness = August Schleck. 10

Notes for Nicholas [John Nic] SCHLECH [SCHLECK]
Nic(h)olas {John Nic?}
Annie C was daughter and died as a baby. She was reason Nicholas Schlech bought plots at The Lutheran All Faiths
Cemetery in Middle Valley, NY; Probably only son was Frederick; all the others males were not his children;
reason..he died too young to have that many children; Also, Fred was also considered to be an ‘only child’;
Died of chronic parenchymatic nephritis and pericarditis which he had had for 21 years, since he was 181;
Possibly John [Johan] Schlecht who came to US in 1868 when he was 20 yrs old. 4 or Joh. Schlech who came to US
Oct 8, 1869 when he was 20 years old

Possibly had a candy store in NY. She also lived with a Mr. Genero in a tenement house. Alyce Perrine Schlech
visited her once with Howard, Lillian, and Frederick. Her son, Frederick Schlech, used to send her money every

Think this is the woman that Howard Schlech called “Gramma Weck” because he couldn’t pronounce “Schlech”
when he was little.4
Anna lived on Marshall Street, Hempstead, Long Island, NY [c/o John Coefford];
