“A friend is one who knows you and loves you just the same.”
Elbert Hubbard
A note from your President:
Dear Club Ladies,
I would like to again thank all of you for making our January Installation of
Officers and New Members such a rousing success. I thought the evening
went beautifully and I appreciate everyone’s help after the meeting. A
special Thank You to Pat Harrington for such a lovely looking/tasting
reception after our meeting.
The District 7 Arts Festival is Saturday, February 11 at the Shallotte
Presbyterian Church. So far I have twenty two members from
our club attending and it should be an interesting and informative event. I
am looking forward to viewing all the art from our club as well
as that from the other clubs and schools that will be participating. Our club
scholarship winner will be there with her Mom. Good luck to Olivia Brown!
Our programs for 2012 are as follows. I am thinking that we should keep
the months/committees the same each year. That way, when a
new Chair is appointed, she will know exactly what month she will have
available for her program. This years' list follows:
January/Club Arts Event/Member and Officer Installation
February/Home Life (Kris Thomas -- our program speaker)
March/Conservation
April/Charity Gala Round Table
May/Installation of New Members/Education
September/Public Issues
October/International
November/Arts
December/Holiday Social
April 21st is almost around the corner and we are busy working on our
upcoming Charity Gala. The committee is meeting the first and third
Thursdays of each month. Everyone is encouraged to participate in some
way and we look forward to involving ALL of our MEMBERS in this event.
Julie and B.J. will keep us updated. This year we have decided to “upgrade”
the meal by adding a salad and served dessert. Three of us are heading to
the Caterer's to finalize the menu (one of my favorite things). Think
Spring!!
We now have the information regarding the State Arts Festival at Campbell
University on March 10. Let's see how we do at the District Arts
Festival and we can then talk about our plans for March. I am hoping that a
number of us will be making the trek to Buies Creek for one overnight.
Please be welcoming to all of our new members and let's try to get them
involved in some of our many ongoing projects. I look forward to this year
as your president and as always I am available for any questions or concerns
that you may have.
In Federation Love,
Peggy Schiavone, President

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Art Service Program Committee
Caroline Galan, Chair
Conservation Service Program Committee
The Conservation committee will be hosting the March GFWC meeting on
March 20th, 2012. In the meantime, our new committee will be meeting for
a time of fellowship and working lunch on February 17th to finalize the
details about this upcoming program. We have a fabulous group of ladies on
this committee and I am looking forward to the next year promoting
conservation in many areas.
- Penny Heidtke, Chair
Education Service Program Committee
The winner of the 2012 Carey Page Truesdell Scholarship competition for
GFWC of Holden Beach is Olivia G. Brown. Friends and family established
this special scholarship in memory of a former club member. It serves as
our local level of the GFWC of North Carolina’s district and state Sallie
Southall Cotten Scholarship. This is the third year that we have given this
scholarship.
Jane Decker, Donna Geise, and Maureen Wright interviewed 5 incredibly
talented North Brunswick High School seniors. As judges, we were amazed
at the high caliber of students during the February 2 interviews. We had a
difficult decision to make, but in the end, Olivia stood out as number one.
Olivia will be our representative on Saturday, February 11, 2012, to win the
District 7 Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship. We hope that you can attend
the District 7 Arts Festival to cheer her on. We will be awarding the Carey
Page Truesdell Scholarship to Olivia at our February meeting on Tuesday,
February 21, 2012.
-Donna Geise, Chair
Home Life Service Program Committee
Nancy Sullivan, Chair
International Outreach Community Service Program Committee
I’m looking forward to meeting and working with our International Outreach
Committee soon. Our members are Julie Wolfe, Linda Sturgill, Dulce
Atkinson, Fran Mainardi, Gracie Annecchiarico, and Carolyn Metrakos. Sure
sounds like a great group.
-Pam Burris, Chair
Public Issues Community Service Program Committee
Our organization has been focusing on domestic violence of women this past
year; I would like to reach out to each of you in another area of abuse that
can affect a younger person. This month has been designated “TEEN
DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION MONTH”.
The repercussions of teen dating violence are impossible to ignore. They not
only hurt the victims but their families, friends, schools and community. You
can help break the cycle by discussing with a teen you know how love includes
the following: equality, respect, caring, togetherness, giving, growing and
using one’s voice. There is plenty of information on line to assist you if
necessary. You can make a difference in the life of a teen.

Here’s to a Healthy Valentine’s Day!
“What shall I do on Valentine’s day, to show my love for you?
A healthy meal, a Valentine card and a walk in the park for two!”
How appropriate that February is American Heart month.
Celebrate Valentine’s Day by treating yourself and loved ones to a
heart-healthy meal that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables.
Plan an event that encourages physical activity, and give your
loved one a favorite healthy alternative to candy.
Now let’s work on our minds:
Unscramble the Valentine’s Day word jumble:

A BIG welcome to our newest Club members:
Donna Craig -- Sandi Emerson -- Carol Gardner
Carla Payne -- Connie Price -- Jeannine Sweet
Jackie Weathers. Please give them a friendly
“HELLO” and welcome them into our club.
Here are some thoughts on taking time to
connect with others:
Yesterday I met a stranger...
Today this stranger is my friend.
Had I not taken the time to say hello, return a smile,
shake a hand, or listened, I would not have known
this person or made a new friend.
