◆Faults occurring in monitored sensors or components are stored in fault memory together with
an indication of the type of fault.
◆The fault table is arranged according to the 5-digit fault codes on the left.
◆Sporadic faults are marked "SP" on the fault reader display.
◆Do not immediately replace components indicated as being defective by the fault reader, but
rather: Start by checking wiring and connectors to these components in line with current flow
diagram. Also use current flow diagram to check earth connections. This is particularly important
if faults are output as being "sporadic" (SP).
◆After eliminating faults, erase fault memory.

Notes:



◆If storage of fault code "00546" is accompanied by fault code "1318 No communication", date
of engine control unit manufacture must be checked.
◆On account of incorrectly dimensioned resistor in engine control unit, engine stutters or cuts out
at high ambient temperatures and with intense sunlight penetration. Faults can be erased and
engine will start again after vehicle has been left standing in the shade for roughly 1 hour.
◆Check sticker on engine control unit to establish whether date of manufacture was between
14.04.01 and 12.07.01. If this is the case and the two faults mentioned above have been stored,
engine control unit is to be replaced.




◆If storage of fault code "1318 No communication" is accompanied by fault code "00546", date
of engine control unit manufacture must be checked.
If this is the case and the faults mentioned above have been stored,
engine control unit is to be replaced.

Safety precautions
Pay attention to the following if testers and measuring instruments have to be used in the course of a test
drive:
Attention:

◆If measurements/tests have to be performed whilst driving, vehicle diagnostic, testing
and information system VAS 5051 or fault reader V.A.G 1551is always to be attached to
rear seat and operated from there.
If testers and measuring instruments were to be operated from front passenger's seat, person sitting there
could suffer injury in the event of an accident due to triggering of front passenger's airbag.
Test requirements:




● Coolant temperature at least 80 °C
● Electr. loads switched off (radiator fan must not run during test)
● Air conditioner switched off
● Selector lever set to P or N
Test sequence

‒ Connect up vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051=>Page 01-3 and
select vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" from list. Ignition must be on.
Or, depending on desired operation:

‒ Start engine.
→ Indicated on VAS 5051:

‒ From list -1- select diagnostic
function "08 - Reading

◆The injection system features idling speed smooth running control. Differences in power
between the individual cylinders (component tolerances, injector delivery, compression, etc.) can
be detected and compensation provided by way of selective injection quantity metering at idle.
◆Detection takes place at idle by way of the signal from the engine speed sender, which
provides the control unit with six signals per crankshaft revolution. If the signals arrive at equal
intervals, all cylinders are providing the same power. If one cylinder is less powerful, the next 120
° crankshaft revolution will take longer. Conversely, a powerful cylinder will accelerate the
crankshaft to such an extent that less time is required.
◆If the control unit detects a difference, the cylinder concerned is immediately supplied with a
greater or lesser injection quantity until the engine runs smoothly again.
◆The measured value block displays the difference in injection quantity of the individual
cylinders as compared to cylinder 2 required for smooth engine idling.
◆+... mg/S: Cylinder concerned is less powerful than cylinder 2 and is therefore supplied with
more fuel
◆-... mg/S: Cylinder concerned is more powerful than cylinder 2 and is therefore supplied with
less fuel

◆Display groups 13 and 14 show the differences in injection quantity of cylinder banks 1 and 2
respectively. If there is an appreciable difference between the injection quantities of the cylinder
banks, check: Toothed belt tension, tensioning roller and injection timing
