The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Mission Statement
Our Mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve
the quality of life of patients and their families.
About The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health
organization dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma,
and improving the quality of life of patients and their families.
LLS supports three primary programs: research, patient services, and advocacy to help
us reach our mission. Since it began in 1949, LLS has awarded over $680 million in
research grants specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Now at about
$69 million annually, the LLS’s grant programs are among the most prestigious in the
fields of hematology and oncology. As of June 2008, LLS has 388 active grantees and 9
research contracts in the United States and abroad.
Funding from generous donors has allowed LLS to identify and support promising
research. This research has led to key advances in understanding blood cancers and the
lifesaving drugs and treatments needed to fight them. In recent years, scientists
affiliated with LLS have advanced the search for cures with discoveries including:



Molecularly targeted treatments that kill cancer cells with less harm to normal
cells,
Understanding of new ways to disrupt cancer cell proliferation, findings that aided
in the discovery and application of the drug Velcade to multiple myeloma,
Imatinib mesylate (Gleevec) the molecularly targeted drug, used in pill form, to
create sustained remissions in CML and several other types of cancer.
In fiscal year 2010, LLS made over 4.7 million contacts with patients, caregivers and
healthcare professionals through our Information Resource Center (IRC), our award
winning website and community-based patient services programs.
With more than 20,000 advocacy volunteers throughout the country, our voice is being
heard by those responsible for legislation to fund blood cancer research and educational
programs.
About Blood Cancers
More than 912,000 Americans have leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or
myeloma. Every four minutes, someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every 10
minutes, someone dies.
Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children under the age of
20. Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers and incidence increases with age.
2
The survival rate for myeloma is only 35 percent. Incidence is nearly twice as high
among African Americans as for all other races.
About the Team In Training Program
Team In Training is LLS’ largest and most successful fundraising program. Since TNT’s
inception in 1988, 420,000 participants have raised over 1 billion dollars. Last year, LLS
was able to put 76.1% of funds raised to research, patient services and advocacy.
Team In Training (TNT) is the world’s largest endurance sports training program
participating in accredited endurance events in the United States and abroad. The
program provides four to five months of training under the guidance of local coaches to
run or walk a full or half marathon, hike a national park, complete a triathlon or cycle a
century (100-mile) bike ride. In return for professional training and event travel, the
TNT participants raise valuable funds in the fight against blood cancer. Each member
of the team is participating in honor of a child or adult from our community affected
with a blood cancer. Completing a marathon, triathlon, hike or century ride is a
celebration of human spirit, physical ability and mental endurance. For members of
Team In Training, it is also a celebration of life.
Our Audience
By offering personalized running, walking, cycling, hiking and triathlon programs, Team
In Training attracts a wide audience. Our target market includes professionals, ranging
in age from 24 to 55, interested in reaching personal fitness goals with the guidance of
a coach and the support of a team while having the capacity and desire to raise
significant funds for others in their community.
Visibility
