NCFS 2008 Call for Papers Empire, Identity, Exoticism The 34th Annual International 19th-Century French Studies Colloquium Vanderbilt University Nashville, Tennessee 16-18 October 2008 The theme for the 2008 colloquium is “Empire, Identity, Exoticism.” Contributions that explore the intersection of these themes from a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary methodologies and approaches—from literary to social and political culture to visual aesthetics—in nineteenth-century France are especially welcome. Possible Paper Topics may include (but will not be limited to): Indigénophile writing Africanisms and Orientalism Religion and Colonialism Colonial Encounters and Representations (race, gender, sexuality) Preludes to the Colonial Expositions Colonial Cinema Popular Culture Science of Difference and Inequality La Mission Civilisatrice Missionaries and Masters Ethnography Art and Visual Aesthetics Travel Writing and Literature Natural History Typologies and Anthropology The Colonial Archive and Museums National Identity The Imperial Gaze Architecture Culinary Encounters Imports/Exports Slavery, Cotton, and Sugar Colonial Technologies Colonial Bodies/Embodiment Fashion, Dress, Adornment Migration/Immigration Journalism and Advertising Comics and Caricatures Chansons Military Submissions for individual papers or sessions may be in French or English and should be in the form of an abstract (250 words) sent as an email attachment as a Word document or by post.
