Santa Barbara Foundation Previews New Brand Identity

New Logo Reflective of Commitment to Entire County

Santa Barbara, September 30, 2010 – Santa Barbara Foundation previewed its new brand identity at the Man and Woman of the Year Dinner, an annual event highlighting the intersection of volunteerism, philanthropy and community leadership.

The Santa Barbara Foundation logo has been an instantly recognizable icon in the area for many years. Born out of the Foundation’s home, the Hill-Carrillo Adobe, the “red-roof” logo has become widely known and well respected. As the enduring image of all the Foundation stands for, it must necessarily evolve in step with the new initiatives implemented this year to better address the challenges and needs of the community. Through a more contemporary design, we have added elements that are evocative of the entire county, not just the red roofs of Santa

Barbara itself. The logo draws inspiration from the shapes and colors that represent the sea, the sky and the rolling hills – familiar views from Santa Maria to Carpinteria and all points in between. The all important roof-line has been slightly redesigned to better symbolize strength and shelter – continuing the Santa Barbara Foundation mission to act as steward for all of the communities in the county we serve.

“As we have sharpened our strategic plan to better address the challenges and needs of our community over the next decade, we felt it important for our brand to evolve with those objectives,” said Ron Gallo, president & CEO of the Santa Barbara Foundation.

“The new logo centers on the enduring image of what the Foundation stands for - the roof line that symbolizes strength and shelter, while also adding elements that are evocative of the entire county,” said Alixe Mattingly, VP of Marketing and Communications of the SB Foundation.

“We wanted to use the opportunity to bring a more contemporary feel to the design, and to stay in step with the Foundation’s strategic priorities.”

This year, the Foundation has developed a new responsive grantmaking program to have more impact on our county’s most pressing needs, and has created new investment opportunities that will strengthen the excellence, innovation and collaboration of the nonprofit sector. Another priority is a renewed outreach in our North County communities, which is also reflected in the new logo.

The Santa Barbara Foundation partnered with Brainstorm Creative, a local marketing communications consultancy that has worked with many of the world’s most respected brands, to develop a new look that embraces the entire county and speaks to the future.

The new brand identity will be rolled out progressively in the coming months and culminate with the Foundation’ s move in December from the historic Adobe to a more contemporary headquarters at 1111 Chapala Street, better positioned to serve its many donors and nonprofit and Foundation partners. The Foundation will also launch a redesigned Web site at that time. Its redesigned, quarterly newsletter “The Common Good” will also aim to become a true “journal of philanthropy” in our county.

“Santa Barbara County has never needed its community foundation more, and, being at the very center of philanthropy in this region, our goal is to provide leadership to the philanthropic sector, helping it to expand, build capacity, deepen impact and get results. We have a clear and passionate vision to build vibrant communities throughout Santa Barbara County into the next decade,” said Ron Gallo, CEO.

The Santa Barbara Foundation will continue to turn community dollars into community change.

Positive change that impacts our community’s greatest needs. Important change that turns challenges into achievements. Change that educates, heals, inspires, and nurtures. By harnessing the collective wisdom of our geography and providing solid financial stewardship, we touch the lives of thousands of people in our county. We are 82 years young and with the unwavering support and generosity of our community, we will continue to make a positive and lasting impact on the entire county of Santa Barbara long into the future.

About Santa Barbara Foundation

For nearly 100 years, community foundations have been trusted to play a vitally important role in American philanthropy. Today there are more than 700 community foundations across the

United States, and the Santa Barbara Foundation is among the oldest and largest. In 1928, a forward thinking group of people, led by Max Fleishmann, started the Santa Barbara

Foundation to enrich the lives of the people of Santa Barbara County through philanthropy.

Since then, the generosity and foresight of our Santa Barbara Foundation donors have enhanced the quality of life for all county residents while fulfilling their own charitable goals. Through careful stewardship of thousands of donations and hundreds of funds entrusted to the foundation, our assets for our community have grown to exceed $250 million today. In the last years, more than $100 million has been given back to Santa Barbara County through grants to nonprofit agencies and through student financial aid.
