(Re LEWIS S. LEE – Ballard Co. Sheriff and Trustee of Cane Creek Baptist
Church, lived near Wickliffe, died July 31, 1894)
L. S. LEE, an old settler of Ballard County, was born February 17, 1810, in
Davidson Co. TN, and is the seventh of twelve children born to John and Jennie
(TUGGLE) Lee, natives of Virginia, and of English descent; the father from
“Lightfoot” Lee, of Revolutionary fame. The parents first moved to Tennessee
about 1800, where they both died. L. S. Lee came to Ballard County about 1833,
and settled within about one mile of where he now lives in 1839. In 1865, he
came to his present place of 330 acres, which he has improved. He has made
accumulations by his own integrity and perseverance, as he was but a small boy
when his father died; his mother died before the War, aged about eighty years.
His mother was born February 22, 1769; his father was born March 30, 1764; he
was a soldier of the Revolution, and they were married July 5, 1788. The subject
had two brothers in the War of 1812, and both were in the battle of New Orleans.
The only education Mr. Lee ever got is what he has procured at home by his own
efforts. In 1855, he commenced riding as deputy sheriff, in 1858 was appointed
to fill an unexpired term caused by the death of the sheriff, and was subsequently
elected two terms. In 1868, he was again elected and filled the office with honor
and credit. He was married in September 1839, to Nancy WATSON of
Montgomery County, TN, and had born to them seven children: Elizabeth
(deceased), Robert (deceased), John, Sarah (now MABERY), Polly Ann
(deceased), Henry H., and Thirga Ann. Mrs. Lee died November 1844, a
member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Lee is also a Baptist and was a Granger. He
cast his first presidential vote for General Jackson and still votes the Democratic
ticket.
Comment: Lewis Lee’s son, Henry Harrison Lee, married Mary HELTON,
daughter of Ransom Helton and Mary “Polly” WATSON
