‫המון פעמים לאורך העונה אפשר היה לראות שחקנים בירושלים יושבים על הספסל‪ ,‬מביטים‬
‫לנקודה מרוחקת בחלל האולם ונותנים לדברים של שמיר להיכנס מאוזן אחת ולצאת מהשנייה‪ .‬שרק‬
‫ייגמר כבר פסק הזמן ויוכלו ללכת איש‪-‬איש לגורלו‪ .‬מי למגרש‪ ,‬רחוק משמיר‪ ,‬ומי להישאר על‬
‫הספסל ולראות את זיו גבו‪.‬‬
‫גם בית הלחמי לא גילה רגישות‪ ,‬לפחות לא ממה שהשמיע בכלי התקשורת‪ .‬הוא המשיך לדבר על‬
‫משחקים צמודים ועל חוסר מזל פה ושם ועל גרוש שחסר ללירה ושאר ביטויים שנותנים תחושה‬

Dan Shamir and Ariel Beit Halachmi know basketball extremely well but cannot
understand that inside every jersey there dwells an ordinary person. The latter
has already lost his job; the other is on very thin ice.
A minor item of midweek news tells of three foreigners playing for Ironi Nahariya
meeting with the management and threatening to quit the team if Ariel Beit
Halachmi stays on. Ultimately, whether or not the meeting had any bearing on
the coach’s departure, it may be assessed that a large proportion of HaPoel
Jerusalem supporters calling for Dan Shamir to be fired both before and after
their home defeat by Ironi Ashkelon, were very pleased with the development.
Or any other development, just as long as Shamir is long gone.
Professionalism aside, it is felt that both coaches are lacking in various aspects
of the same set of skills. It is roughly called communication with players and the
way they treat them. It is hardly surprising that they find it difficult to understand
or, perhaps, that they are too ashamed to admit that it really has little to do with
either their professionalism or with that of the players. It runs much deeper: the
players do not pick up on the messages and cannot take in their orders; it may
be worse: they understand but are neither eager nor even willing to obey.
During timeouts, players’ remarks are guarded. Shamir can construct plays,
compose plans and run moves by them all in a single crowded minute.
Sometimes, however, it is better to say less and to check by a supportive look or
just by a small physical gesture that everything is connected up and that the
juice is flowing between him and his players. These things do not begin and end
during time outs. They come out in smiles, a kind remark and the ability to get
basketball out of the way occasionally and to treat the player as a person, not
just as someone whose job it is to block a pick ‘n roll or to dribble faultlessly.
Many times during the season Jerusalem players were seen on the bench,
staring into the middle distance and allowing Shamir’s remarks to go in one ear
and out the other. Let the time out be over so each of us can go to his fate,
some to the court, away from Shamir, and others to the bench, where they can
see the back of him.
Nor did Beit Halachmi display any sensitivity, at least as far as the media were
concerned. He still refers, here and there, to close games and bad luck and to
just short of and the other expressions meaning that things are about to work
out. He is still the tough coach who believes that work and more work will make
his team more successful, will stabilize it and make it play better basketball.
It’s a bit like a state of denial. The odd point can really make a difference but
only a localized difference. The problem with a team that cannot reach its true
potential over a period of several long weeks is not the occasional miss. To hear
him repeat the same things ad nauseum is annoying for Nahariya supporters, let
alone for the players themselves.
The coach cannot or will not see the ever-present undercurrents. That things
are happening and, by the way, that the undercurrents are not because he has
just stamped his foot and exhorted his players to greater effort. They are there
because of the presence of a seething cauldron of discontent caused by
superficial time-wasting and an unwillingness to be flexible or to consider
change.
In an interview, Shamir spoke of difficult days during the season and hinted at
his coaching concept regarding everything linked to the players’ normal
routines: “Following the resounding defeat at Zadar I went to Danny Klein and
asked him what he thought should be done. He said to me, ‘perhaps you should
hug the players; tell them you love them’. I told him to stop talking nonsense, we
have been together for eighteen months, I’ve never done it and I’m not starting
now. I have always been leery of doing the first thing that came into my head.”
“The job of a coach is to provide a counterweight and to generate spins. If the
team is too calm and happy he needs to yell and curse, and if it seems to lack
confidence the opposite is true. By the way, in all this time no one has ever
hugged me or told me that they love me and I have never felt the need.”
In answer to an interviewer’s question following the most recent games, Shamir
let slip that he was not really interested as to why his players were feeling
frustrated and that there were many basketball players who felt the same way. It
seemed then, as it does now, like an ill-considered remark unworthy of the
person uttering it.
Not all coaches have to be mother, father and psychologist to their players;
however, ultimately, they are a family, particularly the foreign players, who
routinely see their coach far more than their blood relatives. Beit Halachmi and
Shamir have long careers ahead of them. It would not hurt them and others of
their ilk to abandon their sullen-and-angry, basketball-professional-expert,
result-demanding, bottom-line-emphasizing and, occasionally, terrifyingly
monotonous masks, even if it reflects their true, undisguised characters. The
point being that the players should be made to feel that the coach plays a
positive role in the general scheme of things and that they all have a common
objective and a common goal.

participated in international sport championships. Due to the
continuous warfare between Israel and the Arab states, there

1. In 2001, the Israeli basketball title holder Maccabi Tel Aviv won the Suproleague Cup
(the International Basketball Federation) after beating the Greek team 81-67. In 2004, two
Israeli basketball teams won in two European tournaments; Hapoel Yerushalayim won the
ULEB Cup (Union of European Leagues of Basketball), beating the Spanish team 83-72,
and Maccabi Tel Aviv won the Euroleague Cup, the highest caliber professional basketball
league in Europe, beating the Italian team 118-74. In 2005, Maccabi Tel Aviv won the
Euroleague Cup again. In 2006 and 2007 neither team won a European cup. In 2008,
Maccabi Tel Aviv lost 77-91 against the Moscow CSKA team, and Hapoel Yerushalayim

Maccabi Tel Aviv lost its 15-year title as Israel's national champion.
