CLINICAL SKILLS NURSE
School of Nursing and Midwifery
The School of Nursing and Midwifery is rapidly developing and now offers BSc
Nursing, BSc Midwifery, MSc and PhD level education together with postgraduate clinical focused Postgraduate Diploma/MSc programmes in
Midwifery, Public Health, Critical Care (ITU/CCU/A/E), Peri-operative,
Gerontology, Acute and Enduring Mental Health Problem, Multiple and
Complex Intellectual Disabilities) and Neonatology.
The School is seeking to appoint a full-time Clinical Skills Nurse who will work
in the Clinical Skills Resource Centre (CSRC). The post involves a significant
degree of contact with students and members of academic staff especially
Course Director(s)/Co-ordinator(s) and Branch Leaders, Suppliers and Health
Service Agencies.
Reporting to the Head of School through the Clinical Skills Manager the
Clinical Skills Nurse will undertake the following duties:
Clinical Skills Laboratory
 Co-ordinate and plan with academic staff the requirements for
timetabled practical session prior to the commencement of each
academic term.
 Co-ordinatie the preparation and clearing of skills rooms with clinical
equipment required for teaching sessions
 Preparation of mannequins for the specified teaching session including
for example, preparation of nasogastric tubes, cathterisation, intravenous
fluids, etc.
 Act as a resource to academic staff particularly with regard to the use of
high-fidelity mannequins and equipment
 Ensure the day-to day smooth running of the CSRC
 Undertake training to up-date and develop expertise in equipment
operations/functions.
 Co-ordinate, in conjunction with academic staff, the assessment of
clinical skills through practical examinations, for example Objective
Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and other assessment
techniques.
 Record the attendance of all students at clinical skills sessions by
maintaining a log of non-attendees in liaison with appropriate academic
and administrative staff.
 Co-ordinate and monitor student’s independent use of facilities and
equipment
 Where appropriate assist in the teaching of clinical skills as required
and develop an area of expertise
 In conjunction with the CSRC Manager develop new systems and
structures for the delivery of practical sessions


Assist in the development of policies and procedures for the CSRC
Assist in the development and maintenance of standardised patient bank
Equipment
 Maintain equipment, monitor warranties and guarantees of equipment
and arrange for regular essential servicing and repairs.
 Log new and asset tag equipment acquisitions and in collaboration with
Clinical Skills Manager or nominee conduct an annual stock-take of all
equipment thus contributing to the maintenance of an asset register.
 Order a suitable stock level of consumables and equipment as agreed
with the Clinical Skills Manager for each period of teaching
 Monitor the use of equipment and consumables.
 Co-ordinate receipt of deliveries and storage of equipment and
consumables.
 Co-ordinate regular cleaning and hygiene standards of equipment,
instruments and skills rooms.
General Duties
 Complete written reports on illness, accidents or incidents involving
staff, students or visitors to the CSRC and report to Clinical Skills
Manager
 Ensure the security of CSRC and associated areas
 Maintain a safe working environment for staff, students and visitors to
the CSRC.
 Arrange for used and waste materials to be recycled or removed
effectively in keeping with UCC practice.
 Any other duties as assigned by Head of School or nominee.
Decisions made at shortlisting and interview will be based on the
following criteria.
Essential Criteria
 Be registered as a nurse with An Bord Altranais (or deemed suitable by
ABA for such registration)
 Have at least 3 years post-registration clinical experience
 Have recent and ongoing health service experience at staff nurse level or
above
 Understand the direct entry BSc Nursing and BSc Midwifery degree
programme and the clinical element of the course
 Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills
 Possess excellent organisation skills
 Be familiar with Health and Safety legislation
 Possess competent IT skills
Desirable criteria
 Have worked in an educational setting
 Have undertaken training in moving and handling

Hold a nursing degree
Note; As the School and indeed the University, continues to expand and
evolve, it is likely that flexibility in regard to the allocation of specific duties will
be necessary. Accordingly the list of duties detailed above is not intended to
be exclusive or restrictive, duties may be added or withdrawn but any such
alterations will take place within the remit of the Head of Department and after
consultation with the appointee.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Salary within the scale: €42,917 - €50,885 [new entrants] (Clinical Nurse
Manager 1), depending on qualifications and experience
Pension: There is an excellent pension scheme in operation, which provides
personal retirement benefits as well as benefits for spouses and children. The
overall contribution rate approximates to 6½% of salary (3% of pensionable
remuneration and 3½% of net pensionable remuneration). Tax relief is
accrued on these payments.
The maximum pension, based on 40 years reckonable service, comprises an
occupational pension from UCC with an entitlement to a contributory state
pension. Together both pensions provide a maximum of 50% of final salary
and the UCC scheme provides a lump sum of 1½ times final salary (currently
tax free). The University operates schemes for the transfer of service or
pension benefits from other schemes and a purchase scheme to allow
members to increase their pensionable service.
In addition, additional dependants’ benefits can be provided by membership of
the Voluntary Life Assurance Scheme.
Hours of Duty: A 39 hour week applies to the post. Due to the nature and
level of the post it will be necessary for the holder to work flexible time
schedules.
Annual leave is 26 working days per annum, (pro rata), with additional leave
at
prescribed
times,
total

days
per
annum.
Tenure:
(a)
The usual probationary period of one year will apply. Subject to
satisfactory completion of the probationary period, the post will be
permanent and pensionable.
(b)
Except in circumstances of gross misconduct justifying immediate
dismissal, the appointee will receive one month's notice of termination
of employment, or, if greater, such notice as is provided for in the
Minimum Notice & Terms of Employment Act, 1973.
(c)
Appointee is required to give one month's notice of termination of
employment.
(d)
Under the Public Service Superannuation Act 2004, for all new entrants
to the Public Sector on or after April 2004, the normal retirement age is
65. It is no longer possible therefore to retire before age 65.
Membership of the Group Personal Accident Scheme shall apply to all
employees, subject to individual acceptance by the Insurance Company. The
salary quoted is subject to a deduction from salary at the rate of .008%
The Pay Related Social Insurance Class A1 rate of Pay Related Social
Insurance (PRSI) applies to the posts which is currently 6% with an earnings
ceiling of €48,800.
Voluntary Health Insurance:
A VHI/BUPA/HAS/VIVAS Health group
scheme is in operation and contribution may be deducted from salary on
request.
