PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO), a non-profit organization founded in 1963, is
dedicated to preparing students to lead by example in their families, communities, and careers. The
SEO Scholars Program is a free eight-year academic program that gets low-income public high
school students to and through college.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The SEO Scholars Program is looking for English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics
instructors who are available to teach in our Summer Academy (July 8 – August 2). Each day,
instructors are responsible for teaching four one-hour classes, which will be held between 9:30 AM4:30 PM at Baruch College. The typical load is two Critical Reading classes and two Vocabulary
classes OR two Critical Writing classes and two Grammar classes OR four mathematics classes.
Classes meet Monday through Friday, and instructors should expect to teach approximately twenty
students per class. Instructors are also responsible for tracking homework completion, generating
report card grades and comments, providing feedback on student issues, and upholding SEO
policies and principles. All syllabi, lesson plans, student handouts, and rubrics/grading guidelines are
provided by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate:
 Can skillfully read, interpret, and implement a one-hour lesson plan
 Demonstrates strong interpersonal, oral, and electronic communication skills
 Has proficiency in using Google Drive (i.e. Google Documents)
 Seeks to work with a diverse staff and high school student population
 Is a graduate/doctoral student with proven excellence in his/her field
 Has high school and/or college-level teaching experience
 Holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English, Mathematics, or some related field
(Master’s Degree in education and/or New York State Teaching Certification are desired but
not required.)
Summer Academy instructors are compensated at a competitive per diem rate.
