HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
INDEPENDENT STUDY

COURSE INFORMATION
This course covers the philosophy, policies, procedures, and practices relating to the
management of people within an organization. Topics include motivation, job design, work
rules, recruitment, selection, training, performance appraisal, compensation, labor relations,
health and safety management.

COURSE PURPOSE, GOALS, AND SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This course provides students with an overview of the issues related to human resources
management. Students will study ways in which organizations can handle personnel issues,
which will help prepare them for managerial and professional roles. Specific course objectives
include:
1.
To introduce students to the field of human resources management, the history
and evolution of the field, and contemporary and future issues facing human
resources managers.
2.
To help students understand the organizational factors that affect human resources
management. These include an organization’s financial, technological, and
physical resources as well as management philosophy, leadership style, and
organizational culture and climate.
3.
To help students understand job design and analysis, work rules and schedules,
recruitment and selection, and orientation and career transitions.
4.
To help students understand employee development, including skill training,
management and career development, and performance appraisal and review.
5.
To provide students with knowledge of compensation, wage and salary
administration, incentive plans, and employee benefits.
6.
To help students understand the nature of employee protection and representation
by discussing the role of labor organizations, the dynamics of negotiating and
managing the labor agreement, and the issues of employee rights.
7.
To aid students with written and oral communication skills, as well as working
together in teams.
IV.
METHOD OF ASSESSING ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Readings: Assigned textbook readings are outlined in Section VIII. The student will
be responsible for completing the assigned readings by the date indicated.

Homework: Individually written research and analyses will be required on end of
chapter questions and case studies. Homework outlined in Section VIII will be sent by e-mail no
later than 12:00 PM on the dates indicated. Late submission of any homework will be
downgraded one whole grade for each day of tardiness.
Exams: The course will consist of three in-class exams comprised of multiple choice,
short answer and essay questions. The exams will be administered in Watkins Teaching Center
at 3:45 PM on the dates indicated in Section VII. Make-up exams will be given only in the case
of a college excused absence or illness. Make-up exams must be completed within three
working days of the regularly scheduled exam.
Chapter Discussions: The students will meet in W 136 at 3:45 PM on the dates outlined
in Section VIII to discuss salient issues of the chapters with the instructor. Feedback will be
provided on homework during these sessions.

VII.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
This is an independent study. The students will be acquiring the content of this course
primarily through their own effort. The students will meet with the instructor at on the dates
indicated in Section VIII to participate in a discussion of the text material, homework
assignments and exam results. Time will be allotted for questions and answers pertaining to
appropriate chapters prior to the beginning of each exam.

XI.
REQUIRED COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
The students will be required to use a word processor application for all homework
assignments and the service audit. The Internet will be used to transmit homework
assignments.

XII.
COURSE POLICIES
Attendance: The students must attend the discussion periods as outlined in Section VIII.
The students need to be absolutely clear that these meetings are obligatory and take appropriate
measures to attend. The students must call the instructor in advance if a conflict arises. A late
penalty may be assessed for each missed meeting.
Academic dishonesty: Academic dishonesty will be dealt with in accordance with the
College policy as described in the Anderson College Student Handbook.
XIII. LEARNING FACILITIES AND RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS
No additional resources will be required beyond the text.
