HONORING DIVERSITY AT STOUFFVILLE DISTRICT SECONDARY SCHOOL
The school and community of Stouffville, as part of York Region, enjoy a diverse population of many different
backgrounds. Diversity is a powerful strength, and a wonderful opportunity to learn about and from each
other. As one of the ways we would like to build upon our knowledge and awareness of Diversity, the Healthy
Schools Committee will be recognizing the most Significant Faith Days (identified as “Diamond Days” by the
YRDSB) over the school year.
The following announcements will be delivered over the next weeks to recognize the Significant Faith Days
that will be celebrated:
Good Friday or Holy Friday
Friday, April 18 is Good Friday for people following the Western Calendar and Holy Friday for people
following the Eastern Calendar. This is a somber occasion, which is observed to commemorate the crucifixion
and death of Jesus Christ. Observances of this day vary widely. Some Christians may attend services, and they
may restrict their diet to particular foods or fast for the day. This is a fundamental part of Christianity, along
with the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. While observed in different ways, many agree that this is the
most important holiday for Christians.
Ridvan
Monday, April 21 marks the beginning of Ridvan (pronounced Riz-wan). Ridvan is a twelve-day festival, the
most important one of the Baha'i year. The twelve days of Ridvan, April 21 to May 2, commemorated the twelve
days that Baha'u'llah spent in the Garden of Ridvan, on an island in The Tigris River. It was this time in the
garden that led to the forming of the beginning of the Baha’I faith. This is a time of festival and celebration and
we want to wish the best to everyone who is celebrating Ridvan.
SAVE THE DATE – UPCOMING PRESENTATIONS AT OUR NEXT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING (APRIL 22, 2014)
The following presentations will take place at our next School Council Meeting (held in the library, starting at
6:30 pm):
1 – The IPP (Individual Pathways Plan)
The IPP will be used by all students in grades 7 to 12 as part of the program and policy document Creating
Pathways to Success: An Education and Career/Life Planning Program for Ontario Schools, Policy and Program
Requirements, K-12, 2013. Use of the IPP will help students achieve the goals of the program, which are to:
 Ensure that students develop the knowledge and skills they need to make informed education and
career/life choices;
 Provide classroom and school-wide opportunities for this learning; and
 Engage parents and the broader community in the development, implementation, and evaluation of
the program, to support students in their learning.
On April 22, we will present information on how SDSS will deliver this program, and have two students discuss
how they have used their IPP in their education and career planning. This session will provide
parents/guardians with information that will help them support their students at home in conversations about
education and career planning, and the use of the IPP.

Host Families Needed by York Region District School Board International Education Homestay Program
Last year over 500 international students attended YRDSB schools in either school year or summer programs.
Students are requesting to live with Canadian families to experience Canadian culture while improving their
English skills. Homestay families receive $800 per month for hosting a student.
If your family can provide a caring, comfortable and secure home for an international student, please contact
YRDSB’s International Education Homestay Services at Jennifer.recine@yrdsb.edu.on.ca. Homestay applicants
will be interviewed and homes will be visited. A Police Check will be required for anyone 18 years of age or
older living in the home.
