Ryan Walsh-Martel 2003 Rael: History 336 September 25, 2001 AMERICAN MEMORY SOURCE REPORT The primary documents resource that I explored was the American Memory section of the Library of Congress website. It is located at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html. The site was created by the Library of Congress as an online digital resource of documents and sources relating to American history. It contains almost entirely primary sources. This site was created during the 1990’s and is updated and expanded regularly. Its purpose is to “offer broad public access to American Memory collections as a contribution to education and scholarship.” It is composed of a large amount of “collections” of material, which are generally specific in their scope, but can at the same time encompass a lot of different subject material. New collections are sometimes added, and information on upcoming collections is available at the website. All the collections relate to some aspect of American history. The American Memory historical collections are digital collections that are part of the Library of Congress’s National Digital Library Program. The formats of the collection include digitized documents, photographs, sound recordings, videos and text. There are also maps, pamphlets, old documents and newspaper articles and books. This website is extremely large and can at times be difficult to navigate through, because topics and areas of interest often span several collections of materials. A good place to start in a search is the collections finder link on the main page, which gives a broad range of topics and collections. For a full list of all specific collections, click the list collections link at the top of the collections finder page. You can select a collection and search that specific collection, or you can search across all or selected collections for a desired subject. Several collections however are not searchable, they are The New Deal Stage: Federal Theatre Project, and the Walt Whitman Notebooks. Several other collections contain material that will not turn up in a general search, so it is a good idea to search through collections that apply to your subject individually. Another place to start a search is by clicking the search link on the main page. This allows you to search for materials throughout all of the collections, and gives several options for the type of search and the limits or scope of the search. This method, while helpful, often turns up a huge amount of information that can prove difficult to sift through, but this method offers a great way to find reservoirs of information within the American Memory website. After you search, for example, for baseball, and end up with over 2000 hits, you get a list of all the hits and can scroll through them, but if you look to the left of each specific hit, you will see the collection to which that document belongs. For example, a hit relating to baseball is under the collection “AfricanAmerican Experience,” I clicked on that hit, and scrolled down to the subject section, which offered two more specific links within the “African American Experience in Ohio.” They were SUBJECTS Afro-Americans--Portraits Afro-American athletes These two links offer more specific collections within the larger collection, and the AfroAmerican athletes link provided me with 255 hits relating only to Black athletes in Ohio. Almost all of these hits were digital photographs of newspaper articles relating to sports, mostly boxing and baseball, from Ohio newspapers. The collections can also be searched by specific type of media. Press the search button, and there is a green box on the left of the screen that offers the option to search just for media such as maps, sound recordings, motion pictures, or different documents. To search for items or media by time period or region, click on the collection finder link, scroll to the bottom, and there are options to click on more specific time periods in American history, starting in the 1400’s and going to the present. This option is broken down into several different time periods, and regions as well. The American Memory site also has links to the Library of Congress website on the homepage, in the upper left hand corner. There are also links to digital collection all around the world, under the link International Horizons. The LC/Ameritech link offers more access to digital information and primary sources from other libraries, museums, and historical societies around the country. The link on the homepage for America’s Library offers access to information for children. This Website is an excellent resource for finding primary material in several different medias on the Internet. One of the main benefits is its affiliation to the Library of Congress and the credibility that it gets because of that. It is a site that cannot provide the sole basis for a research project because it does not have historical narratives, basic history, or criticism, but it is an excellent source of primary documents that can provide the basis for historical research. It is a large collection and at times can become difficult to search through, but the breadth and depth of the materials accessible negate that disadvantage. Another great feature is that every specific document is cited already, on the same page, so citation becomes quite easy.
