TROUP COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM OBSERVES
SCHOOL BOARD APPRECIATION WEEK
LaGrange, Ga., March 16, 2015 – Today marks the beginning of School Board Appreciation
Week throughout the state of Georgia, and Troup County School System is joining in the
festivities of this statewide celebration to salute the efforts of local school board members.
“Our community members elect board members to represent their voice on education matters
and to set the vision for the school district,” said Superintendent of Troup County School
System, Dr. Cole Pugh. “Our board spends countless hours fulfilling its responsibilities and
working together to continually improve our education system.”
Troup County School System Board Members are:
District 1--Rev. Allen Simpson, Board Vice Chair--Board member since 2012
District 2--Dianne Matthews--Board member since 2001
District 3--Sheila Rowe--Board member since 1993
District 4--Ted Alford, Board Chair--Board member since 2011
District 5--Debbie Burdette--Board member since 2001
District 6--Ashley Johnson Adams--Board member since 2013
District 7--Alfred McNair--Board member since 1988
This weeklong observance calls attention to the contributions of the local school board.
Members visit schools on a monthly basis, participate in special events and even advocate for
the school system at the state level. In addition, they attend education trainings and ceremonies
and banquets throughout the year that focus on student and teacher achievements.
As constitutional officers of Georgia, school board members are responsible for setting
educational policies, employing school personnel, providing buildings and equipment, operating
a transportation system and disbursing school funds. As community leaders, school board
members serve as advocates for the children in local public schools and must study, evaluate
and decide what actions are in the best interest of those students.
