Drawing trees with Microsoft Word. Among various more elegant methods, the simplest one (which I use myself) is as follows. (For this assignment the trees do not have to look good. They just have to be accurate.) a) Make sure you are viewing this file, and the one you want to write your answers in, in Seitenlayout-Ansicht (not e.g. Entwurf-Ansicht; you can change this using the menu called Fenster (or Ansicht in older versions of Word)). If you don’t use Seitenlayoutansich you will be unable to see the trees. b) Highlight the tree below with the mouse, and copy it (Strg+C). Paste it into the document you want to use (Strg+V), just below the position where you want to draw the tree. c) Using tabs and/or spaces to position the category labels and the words of the sentence for which you are drawing a tree. d) Click on one of the branches (or lines or triangles if you want them) in the tree you have copied from below. You will find that this highlights a pair of branches (roughly an upside-down V shape). Copy this (Strg+C). e) Paste the branches (just press Strg + V). (The branches may not ‘land’ in the place you pointed to with the mouse; if so, find the branches in the document, click on them, let go of the mouse and use the arrow keys to move the branches roughly into the position where you want them. f) To position the points of each pair of branches more exactly, click the branch with the right mouse key and then press ‘p’ (or click ‘Punkte bearbeiten’). You then see points at the ends and bends of the branches. Click on one of these points, holding the mouse key down, and move the point into the position you want it. Repeat this step for other ends/bends in the branches. g) Repeat these steps for each branch of the tree you need. h) With practice, you may find it easier to do steps a to d first for all branches/lines/triangles in the tree, so that each of them is roughly in position. Then do step f for all of the branches in the tree. IP I’ DP D she I VP will read it
