PROJECT OVERVIEW

Cal State East Bay recognizes that Algebra is the gatekeeper to all other levels of math and that a solid foundation is essential for overall academic success. With this philosophy in mind, CSUEB and its partners are proud to offer the Summer Algebra

Academy., a five-week, math-intensive program designed to assist in preparing students for college-preparatory mathematics. The Summer Algebra Academy will assist students in preparing for academic success in a college preparatory Algebra I course. These academies provide interactive classes and activities that emphasize collaboration, creative thinking, and logical reasoning.

The Summer Algebra Academies take place in 8 locations throughout the Bay Area:

Richmond, Pittsburg, Oakland, Fremont and Hayward. The sites include 5 churches,

1 school and 2 CSUEB campuses. The church and school sites serve rising 8-9 th grade students while the CSUEB campuses serve rising 9-10 th grade males in the

My Brother’s Keeper Project (MBK). The CSUEB/MBK Downtown Oakland Math

Academy has been designated for Geometry Preparation for rising 10 th grade males.

Some sites may be extended to serve high achieving 7 th grade students on an available space basis only.

The Summer Algebra Academy courses do not attempt to take the place of an academic year Algebra I course and will not qualify a student to enter a higher level math course.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Students participating in the Summer Algebra and Math Academy will have the opportunity to experience curriculum and teaching that:

Offers hands-on practice with algebraic concepts

Is culturally responsive to the target population

Is fun and engaging

The Summer Algebra Academy will offer programming that uses curriculum that is reflective of the needs and interests of the target population of students. The curriculum is aligned to the California State Standards, California Standards Test, and the California High School Exit Exam. The curriculum that will be utilized is as follows:

SummerVentures by Kaplan K12 Learning Service (Algebra Intervention

Program)

Hands-On Equations by Borenson and Associates (Algebra Teaching System

Using Manipulatives)

During this course students will gain exposure to algebraic concepts and will receive time to practice their skills independently and collaboratively through the course work of SummerVentures, Hands-On Equations, and ST Math. The course work will be thematic as it will focus on the history of Scientists, Technology wavemakers, Engineers, and Mathematicians (STEM). By studying the accomplishments of others, students will develop a bridge to connect mathematics with future career possibilities. The general outline for the 5-week course is as follows.

Week 1 – Introduction of the algebra and geometry course; investigating what students know about careers in STEM

Week 2 – Exploration of the achievements of Scientists

Week 3 – Exploration of the achievements of Technology wave-makers

8

Week 4 – Exploration of the achievements of Engineers and Mathematicians

Week 5 – Preparation of presentation materials

Each day, students will have the opportunity to have direct instruction in algebraic concepts, learn more about the achievements of Africans and African Americans in

STEM, to explore how mathematics can connect to certain careers, physical games and activities, as well as the opportunity to gain hands-on practice with algebraic concepts.
