MINISTRY OF HEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/2012 1.0 Background The Government of Uganda has received funding from the International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank to support the Uganda Health Systems Strengthening Project (UHSSP) of the Ministry of Health. This five-year project is intended to contribute to the delivery of the Uganda National Minimum Health Care Package (UNMHCP) to Ugandans. The Ministry of Health intends to use a portion of the Credit to provide scholarships for pre and in-service training at various levels (masters, bachelors, diploma & certificate) in accredited health training institutions for the financial year 2011/2012. There are two (2) categories of scholarship schemes, namely; scholarships for hard to reach/hard to stay districts, and scholarships for priority courses/disciplines as indicated below. Please, clearly indicate which scholarship scheme is being applied for. 2.0 Scholarships for Hard to Reach/hard to stay Districts The Hard to Reach/hard to stay Districts being targeted by this advert are; Kotido, Abim, Kaabong, Moroto, Napak, Nakapiripit, Pader, Lamwo,Kitgum, Amuru, Nwoya,Gulu, Adjumani, Kalangala, Mukono including Koome Islands, Buvuma, Bundibugyo, Ntoroko, Kisoro, Kanungu, Mayuge including Islands of Malongwe Sub-County, Bukwo, Bugiri,Namayingo including Sigulu islands, Amolator, Amuria, Zombo, Nebbi, Koboko, Buliisa, Katakwi, Kaberamaido, Yumbe, Moyo, Sembabule, Kabale, Rakai, Maracha, Isingiro, Buyende, and Kiruhura.The scholarship is available for only those candidates wishing to pursue medical related courses. 2.1 Eligibility Criteria The applicants willing to apply for this scholarship should: 2.1.1 Be working in the hard to reach/underserved districts as outlined above. 2.1.2 Have been working for Government in a public health facility or Private Not for Profit (PNFP) health facility not less than 2 years. 2.1.3 Be willing to be deployed in hard to reach areas after completion. 2.1.4 Be willing to sign a bonding agreement with the Government of Uganda (GoU) to work for a period equivalent to the time spent on the course. 2.1.5 Be having an admission letter from a recognized national training institution at the time of award of scholarship; 2.1.6 Candidates who are presently not working should be ready to be deployed to hard to reach/hard to stay districts. 1 3.0 Scholarships for Priority Courses/Disciplines The Priority Disciplines/Courses to be considered under this scholarship scheme are as follows: Master of Medicine courses (Anaesthesia; Pathology, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Neuro – surgery, ENT Surgery, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Oral Facial Maxilla Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Cardiology, Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Paediatrics). Bachelor, Diploma and Certificate Courses (Palliative Care, Biomedical Engineering/Techniques; Medical Laboratory Techniques; Hematology, Dental Technologist, Clinical Pharmacy; Radiotherapy techniques, Radiology Technologists and Radiotherapy technicians, Pharmacy technicians, Midwifery, Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Theatre Techniques, Counseling, Quality of care and Emergency Medicine). 3.1 Eligibility Criteria Applicants wishing to apply for this scholarship should: 3.1.1 Have been working for Government in a Public Health Facility or Private Not for Profit (PNFP) health facility for not less than 2 years 3.1.2 Be willing to sign a bonding agreement with the Government of Uganda (GoU) to work anywhere within the country for a period equivalent to that spent on the course. 3.1.3 Be having an admission letter from a recognized local training institution at the time of award of scholarship NOTE: The scholarships are available to Ugandan Nationals only An applicant should not be a beneficiary of another scholarship Only applicants working in upcountry and rural districts will be considered. Female candidates are encouraged to apply Serving Officers on the Government of Uganda public service payroll or those working with Private Not for Profit (PNFP) Health Facilities should route their applications through their immediate supervisors.
