2013 Scholastic Bowl Summary The Peoria Heights Varsity Scholastic Bowl team won the Peoria County tournament. The team was 8-6 in the Peoria Area League regular season and 5-7 in the Prairieland Conference. The team was fourth at the Galesburg Rotary Tournament, third in the Class A Masonic Sectional and also third at the PHHS Invitational. The team competed in 73 contests on 17 dates with a final record of 38-35. The varsity school record is 1093-557 or about 1105-570 (including “B” or JV games) in 28 years of competition. Team leader in toss-ups was Junior Matt Dang who answered 209 toss-up questions. Senior Jesse Lynch answered 118 (216 career) toss-ups. Junior Nick Runyon was the third varsity scorer with 57 followed by juniors Bob Miller and Joe Dismang with 30 and 24. Seniors Gwen Clayton and Amanda Markovich contributed 16 (22 career) and 7 (11 career). Seniors John Moore, Amber Phillips 1 (2 career), and Logan Troxel 2 (3 career) also played as did Juniors Charles Bender, Emma Frederick, and Cameron Miller. Junior Nicholas McCumber answered 11 toss-ups. Sophomore Michael Raices answered 15 toss-up questions. Sophomores Cody Schindler, Ryan Klute, and Christien Messner, and Freshmen James Janis and Rachel Seitz answered 7, 1, 1, 1, and 1 respectively. A 5.98 per quiz toss-up average resulted from a total of 502 answers by varsity players. A pin in lieu of a third varsity letter went to Senior Jesse Lynch. A second year varsity pin was awarded to Junior Nick Runyon. Varsity letters letters went to Senior Gwen Clayton and Juniors Matt Dang and Bob Miller, and Sophomore Michael Raices. Pins in place of a second JV letter were awarded to Joe Dismang, Nicholas McCumber, Christien Messner, and Cody Schindler (16 FS plus 7 varsity). Junior Varsity letters were awarded to Alex Campbell (14 FS), Michelle Dang (23 FS), James Janis (5 FS plus 1 varsity), Ryan Klute (38 FS plus 1 varsity), Rachel Seitz (19 FS plus 2 varsity), and Emmy Tiethoff (8 FS). Participation certificates were awarded to Nathan Anderson, Shelby Davis, Amanda Markovich, Logan Monast, Amber Phillips, and Logan Troxel. Captain pins were awarded to Matt and Jesse for the varsity team and Cody and Ryan for the FS team. Twenty-seven students participated but only twenty-one met the award criteria plus several did not qualify for higher awards due to absences. The frosh-soph record was 15-23. They answered 139 toss-ups in the 38 quizzes for a 3.66 question per quiz average. Mr. Greg Higby was the FS coach. Matt Dang earned all-tournament recognition at the PORTA Tournament (#3 quizzer). He was also AllConference, named to the IHSA Sectional Team, and All-Tourney at the PHHS Invitational. Jesse Lynch was narned to the All-Conference Team and to the PHHS Invitational Team. Jesse (with 118) and Matt (with 209) also earned One Hundred Point Club plaques and Nick Runyon (with 57) a Fifty Point Club plaque. The team won the IHSA Team Academic Award recognition for the 12th year in a row (minimum 3.0 team average GPA). Seniors Gwen Clayton, Amanda Markovich, John Moore, and Amber Phillips plus juniors Emma Frederick, Bob Miller, and Nick Runyon earned individual IHSA Academic Scholar pins for having at least a 3.5 GPA. Thanks to all the parents, staff, former team members, and non-scholastic bowl students who helped make this a successful, fun, and learning year. They made it possible to successfully host five times this year.
