JOB DESCRIPTION POST: Reserves Officer (Broads, Coast and Wetlands) PRESENT POST HOLDER: DATE: Aug 2012 PREPARED BY: KH OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB: To play an integral role in the effective and efficient day to day running of the NWT Broads, Coast and Wetland nature reserves, to communicate effectively internally and externally and to assist in the development and delivery of capital projects. REPORTING TO: Head of Nature Reserves (Broads, Coast and Wetlands). REPORTING TO POST HOLDER: Supervision of contractors. OTHER WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Within the organisation: Chief Executive Officer, Head of Fundraising, Head of People and Wildlife, Head of Finance, Sales and Visitor Services Manager, Senior Reserves Officer (Administration) PR and Communications Manager, Visitor Centre staff, HQ, staff and other reserves staff, volunteers. Outside the organisation: Staff at Natural England, DEFRA, Forestry Commission, Broads Authority, Environment Agency, Internal Drainage Boards, Water Companies, Local Authorities, landowners, other conservation bodies such as National Trust, RSPB and specialist conservation groups, contractors. MAIN DUTIES: 1. Produce work programmes for all reserves within the Coast and Wetlands portfolio, with assistance from the Head of Nature Reserves and Reserve team staff. 2. Produce annual budgets for all reserves within the Coast and Wetlands portfolio, with assistance from the Head of Nature Reserves and Reserve team staff. 3. Working closely with the Head of Nature Reserves and Reserve team staff, ensure the effective implementation of the strategy and work programmes within budget. 4. Play an integral role in the successful delivery of conservation projects and work with the Head of Nature Reserves and the Fundraising Team to ensure effective forward planning and resourcing to achieve the best possible management for wildlife and people. 5. Be prepared to support reserve staff in practical conservation tasks in a range of habitat types where the need arises. 6. Provide general support and assistance to the Head of Nature Reserves on a range of issues related to NWT Broads, Coast and Wetland nature reserves. 7. Maintain an effective system for updating site management plans for adoption by NWT and approval by Natural England. 8. Led by the Senior Reserves Officer (administration), provide support and assistance in the maintenance of effective information management systems including: Project, contract and management plan reporting Use of G.I.S. and Microsoft Office systems to record essential management information and action plans. 9. Assist in the further development and implementation of the strategy for effective ecological and environmental monitoring of habitats and impact of management works on key species and habitat requirements. 10. Assist in ensuring that all agreed policies and procedures are understood and implemented by the Coastal and Wetland Nature Reserves teams, paying particular attention to Health and Safety procedures and guidelines. 11. Led by the Senior Reserves Officer (administration), assist in the fulfilment of obligations towards Single Farm Payment, Higher Level Stewardship Scheme and other grants as they arise from statutory bodies such as DEFRA, Natural England, Forestry Commission and Environment Agency. 12. Led by the Senior Reserves Officer (administration), assist with the process of managing annual and capital funding claims. 13. Develop good communications and partnerships with other organisations to secure their understanding of, and support for NWT’s work. In consultation with the Head of Reserves, represent NWT at liaison meetings. 14. Work closely with the Head of Nature Reserves and other senior managers to ensure the effective development and management of the Coast and Wetland reserves through adoption of the Business Strategy. 15. Undertake other ad hoc duties as reasonably requested by and/or agreed with the Head of Nature Reserves and CEO. PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES: Qualified to degree level or equivalent in environmental management or a related discipline. Proven experience and ability in practical land management and associated environmental grant schemes. Proven experience of managing contracts and contractors. Excellent interpersonal skills. Sound understanding and technical/practical experience of wildlife conservation and land management issues and methods as they apply to coastal and wetland wildlife habitats. Sound general knowledge of the ecology and natural history of coastal and wetland habitats. A high degree of competence in the use of IT systems, particularly word processing, spreadsheets and information management. A general understanding of G.I.S. would be advantageous. Excellent written and oral presentation skills and experience. Strong organisational and administrative skills. A very strong commitment to nature conservation and the work of Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The ability and attitude to work corporately as a senior member of the reserves team. Preparedness to work unsociable hours including occasional evening and weekend work attending meetings and achieving deadlines. (for which time off in lieu will be granted). Current full driving licence is essential or you must have access to funded flexible transport.
