Picture Dr. Carrano sent to team, uses two buttons, one for “Trouble” and one for “Stop”.
Need to clarify if this would be desired instead of a pull cord system. The system will need a reset function as
well.

Easy to use – how to use the system should be obvious with minimal training
Each person at each of the 4 stations can trigger the system without moving their feet
The signal is immediately visible once triggered (much less that a second response time)
The physical action to trigger the signal, and reset the system, should be the same, or virtually the same There is some confusion regarding what type of switch should be used to activate the system (i.e. pull cord,
button, or some other type of switch).
The system is such that if we are touring someone in the lab, we can quickly explain what the system’s
purpose is and how it works
It needs to be able to be operated safely and in an ergonomically sensible way (no awkward bending or
stretching to reach the “cord” or trigger
Ideally, it can be used by the younger students we have in some of our outreach activities (11 years old
and up)
It can be coupled in some way with a paced line, if we simulate running the 4 station line as a paced line
(which seems likely given this project)
Expandable? In other words, if we added a 5th station? (need to discuss) – I think we still need
confirmation on this, nothing in any of my notes regarding a decision.
Signal, and the station that is its source, needs to be visible from 30 ft away (we can map this into the
current line layout) Note: this requirement refers to the “work area” of the lab, not the entire lab.
Inexpensive

There should be an audible signal as well as a visual signal when the system is triggered.
There should be a master display (summary board) showing status at each station, and cumulative down
time
The monitors at each station should be configured to display the same information as the master display –
Did we ever confirm this with the customer?
The system should have 2 types of activation; one corresponding to a yellow signal which indicates that
assistance is needed at a particular station, and one corresponding to a red signal which indicates that
production has stopped.
In the event of a red signal, the system should record the time from activation to reset, and display this
time.
The system should mimic the Toyota system as much as possible.
The system should include a clear set of instructions which indicate to the users how the system should be
used.
