The focus will be on the offspring – an EGG. You will be expected to take care of your offspring 24 hours a day for two weeks. Your partners will be chosen by random selection. The purpose of this project is to reinforce some ideas from chapter 26 on the human reproduction system. Its focus is to help you understand not only, the purpose and process of this system, but the responsibilities of its outcome (offspring). You will be responsible for meeting all the criteria listed. Be as creative as possible with your responsibility. All sections of this project should be done on the computer. Planning to come before school or remain after school is essential. Make sure that all decisions are made as a team (you and your partner). On Friday, May 20th you will submit all components of the project in a 3-ring notebook, with a title page that includes your names (“the parents”) and the name of your offspring (“the egg”). Remember that this project is designed to help you understand the concepts presented in chapter 26. Your best effort and work is necessary to ensure its success. I sincerely hope this will be a meaningful experience. HAVE FUN and GOOD LUCK! COMPONENT DETAILS 1) Creativity (Partners) – 5 Points – May 6th Your grade for creativity will be based on three components: 1) the container that you create for your offspring, 2) the birth certificate and 3) a picture or drawing of your offspring’s baby room. Note that both you and your partner must agree on the gender of your offspring. This will be noted on the birth certificate and may be taken into consideration when designing the baby room. Although it is optional, you may add body parts (arms, legs, ears, eyes, hair, etc) and clothing to your offspring. 2) Care of Offspring (Partners) – 15 Points – May 6th - 20th It is important to care for your offspring and ensure it is safe. If you drop your egg and it cracks, you must pay to replace it. Your egg will be checked daily for cracks. You must pay $0.50 for your initial offspring and $0.50 for any replacement offspring. There is a maximum of only two replacement eggs. Please store your egg in the refrigerator each night and weekend. 3) Poem (Partners) – 5 Points – May 11th Create a poem from the perspective of the unborn fetus talking to mother about doing drugs, drinking alcohol, or smoking while pregnant. Your poem must be typed and illustrations should be included. An example by Emily Kaplin and Sidney Wise: It’s Not Just You It’s not just your life now Mommy, it’s mine too So don’t do anything That would hurt me and you Inside you right now A new life is starting So stay healthy now Or at least ‘til my departing Anything that you do Passes on to me Anything that you drink or drugs that you do Will not only affect you but my precious life too Do you want me to be sick? Do you want me to die? Then I suggest you think So I don’t have to say good-bye 4) Balanced Budget (Partners) – 20 Points – May 16th Start-up Expenses (Partners) – 5 Points – May 9th When you receive your egg, you will also be given an annual family income. From this income, you will create a balanced budget. You will be given homework and class work tasks to assist you in developing a balanced budget. In addition, you will be required to create a list of upfront costs associated with having a baby. This list would include every thing you must purchase in preparation for a child. Such expenses may include: a crib, changing table, car seat, clothing, blankets, etc. 5) Journal Entries (Individual) – 30 Points – May 20th You will be required to write a journal entry beginning on January 12, 2007. Each journal entry should be dated and contain at least 20 sentences. Please remember subject-verb agreement, spelling, and punctuation. Each person should have 12 journal entries. An example from Janai Johnson: January 11th “Tomorrow our new bundle of joy will be born and I am so excited. We have decided that her name will be Madeline Regain Johnson. I think I want to just call her by her middle name Regain. I will be delivering at Emory Crawford-Long Hospital. I have been through ups and downs during these nine months, but I know it will be all worth it once I see my baby’s face. I’m kinda scared about having a baby. But we have the same doctor as my cousin, so I know it will be ok. Today I went shopping and got some really cute bibs and onesies………” Use your imagination when writing these entries. Some ideas could include: - Any discussions with your partner about family responsibilities (this can be done in person, over the phone, via e-mail, instant messenger…etc.) - Visits/calls made to price items for household and offspring expenses - The duties / activities performed for that day (i.e. we called St. Joseph Hospital to find out the cost of the labor and delivery. We took our offspring to the babysitter so that we could meet with our accountant.). - Your feelings about being a parent and the responsibilities of caring for an offspring. 6) Parent Interview & Paper (Individual) – 10 Points – May 18th You will be required to write up a list of 10 questions to ask your parent or guardian during an interview. Questions could be pertaining to the anatomy and physiology of the human reproduction system, parenting, birth, and even development after birth. You will report your findings in a one page paper about the interview. NOTE: Your teacher must approve all questions. If your teacher doesn’t approve your questions you will not receive credit for this component. 7) Disease Brochure (Partners) – 30 Points – May 13th (draft) You will be making a pamphlet describing the genetic disorder or disease that your offspring has been born with. Your brochure will be graded on the following items: a. Must be computer generated b. Creative c. Illustrations must be included on every page d. Factual information must be used. e. All available space must be used. NOTE: Be sure to write your information in your own words. Do not copy directly from the web, encyclopedia or books. You will receive a failing grade on this project for plagiarizing. 8) Social Skills (Individual) – 5 Points – May 17th When caring for your offspring, you and your partner must be able to communicate effectively with each other. This is a very vital part of the project in order to ensure great success. You are required to type a paragraph that entails how you interacted with your partner. You will also be given a rubric to rate your partners work ethic. This will be taken into consideration when points are given to this particular section. 9) What Did I Learn (Individual) – 10 Points – May 168th Type a one page essay explaining what knowledge you gained from completing this project. An exerpt from Emily Kaplan’s 2004-2005 essay: “I have learned so many things from this project. I have learned some of the responsibilities that is needed to take care of an offspring. I realize that I am not physically, mentally, or emotionally ready to become a parent. Your so called normal life is drastically changed once you have a child and as a parent adjustments must be made.” TIMELINE Throughout this project their will be check points that will be conducted by your teacher.
