Title
General Function: Give a brief description of the position--include purpose, function and objective.
Provide oversight and management in the Library East Commons to support productivity and academic
engagements of Georgia Tech students, faculty, and staff. Curate all aspects of “best research”
showcases, community scholarly events and exemplary artistic expression in the Library East Commons.
Manage and assess the on-going community of learning and productivity in the East Commons. Provide
support for Library and academic department initiatives and projects in harmony with the library PR
committee. Use time management skills to coordinate other responsibilities including covering the
Circulation Desk and providing information services.
Specific Duties: Specific duties with % of time required should be listed in order or importance. Since it
is not practical to list every duty, only the 5 to 10 most important duties should be listed. Each time
should be numbered and begin with an action verb.

Coordinate art, research, and events in the library East Commons. Serve as the contact person for
potential exhibits and keep an updated calendar of events. Set-up physical displays as well as
creating and delivering content for digital signage. Work as a liaison between the library and
students, faculty, and staff in Georgia Tech, who are interested in activities and/or displays in the
Library East Commons by carrying out campus-wide, outreach endeavors. Set-up multimedia
equipment and modify the physical appearance of the theater upon request. Provide active and
knowledgeable assistance and quality service while transforming and interpreting the East
Commons space.

Assess, analyze, and manipulate use of the Library East Commons space to evaluate the
effectiveness of alternative use of space that showcases: the best research, art, and creative
endeavors of the Georgia Tech community. Evaluate the experience through strong observation
and deep interaction with the population in the East Commons.

Act as the first point of contact for the Library East Commons by providing basic technical
support, including troubleshooting computer problems, relating to the use of area personal
computers and peripherals; provide customer support for installed software applications;
provide one-on-one training on how to configure laptops for wireless access; be able to address
problems with printing and allocate printing credits when appropriate; troubleshoot logins;
and perform account re-sets as needed. Under the guidance of the Commons Coordinator, assists
with training the Circulation staff for technical support to the East Commons to help bridge
communication between OIT and the Circulation Department.

Hire, train, schedule and supervise two or more student assistants per semester.

Provide assistance at the Circulation Desk as needed.
Supervision Exercised: Give number and type of staff supervised and amount of supervision and
training provided.
Provides work leadership for 1 or 2 student assistants per semester.
Supervision Received: Give amount and quality of supervision received and amount of training
received.
Supervision is received from the Assistant Department Head through a combination of meetings, daily
updates, and informal contact. Most work is performed independently with minimal direct supervision.
Judgment and Analysis: Give the kinds of decisions to be made and the amount of judgment and
analysis required.
Judgment and analysis are required to: respond appropriately to information requests, provide
information technology support and troubleshooting, interpret user needs, and determine the most
effective ways to satisfy those needs; interpret and communicate Library policy and procedures to users;
set appropriate priorities; recognize problems that need attention. Determine eligibility of exhibits and
events using determined guidelines and make decisions on exhibits and events that might not neatly fit
into those guidelines. Track use of the East Commons space and determine what layout, manipulations
and transformations are most accepted and appreciated by the students.
Relationship with others: Describe relationships and expected behaviors with the public, co-workers,
supervisors.
Work with other GT departments and students to actively produce a dynamic and research-focused
Library East Commons. Work closely with the Library Art and Events Committee. Demonstrate
exemplary customer service skills in all interactions with Library clients; work cooperatively and
effectively with other Library departments and staff.
Knowledge and skills required: Include minimum education required, minimum work experience
required and skills such as written communication, oral communication, microcomputer skills.
Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 2 years academic library experience.
Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and to work in a team environment; experience with event
planning and/or marketing and public relations with demonstrated knowledge of current practices and
techniques; demonstrate a strong customer service orientation; excellent written and oral communication
skills; demonstrated ability to perform complex and multiple tasks.
Desired: Circulation experience; Voyager software proficiency; familiarity with Georgia Tech and Georgia
Tech departments; knowledge of art and exhibition practices and principles; information technology
skills to facilitate use and provide support for software in one or more of the following categories:
productivity, technical, multimedia, or programming software/languages; word processing and
microcomputer skills; web development skills; basic reference skills.
