2862J-2 Book Title :In the King's Shoes Author :Enid Blyton Publisher :Grandreams Books Limited The book I have read is called In the King’s Shoes. This book is a Junior Teen’s Reader. It was written by Blyton Enid. This book is about the brownie pedlar Twiddles and the king who exchanged their position. Once upon a time the brownie pedlar Twiddles was sitting by the land-side mending a kettle. As he sat there, the king of Brownie Land came by himself! He was walking slowly as if he was very tired. He saw Twiddles sitting by the land-side and he sat down beside him. The king’s shoes hurt him. He wanted to take them off for a few minutes. The King slipped off his beautiful, highly polished shoes with silver laces. Suddenly, the king had a foolish and silly idea. He wanted to exchange his status with brownie pedlar Twiddles for a few hours. Twiddles got into the king’s shoes. They fitted him perfectly. He stood up and gazed down at himself in astonishment. He was dressed like a king, and the king was dressed like a pedlar. It was like a magic show! He was delighted as he thought all the people would bow to him and cheer him. He hurried to the waiting carriage and climbed into it. However what was coming was not as wonderful as he thought. He had to stand in the hot sun for about an hour, shaking hands with all kinds of brownies. He began to feel tired. He wanted to have dinner but couldn’t. He had to review his troops of Scouts. He thought it would be fun but it was not indeed! He felt tired and hungry. However, they still needed to see a new ship being launched. A footman presented him with a little packet of sandwiches to eat as there was no time for him to have a proper lunch! After that, he had to visit a hospital. And then there was the flower show to go. He walked around the wards. By the time he had finished, his feet felt as if they could not walk another step. He yawned and yawned at the flower show. He didn’t want to see the beautiful flowers they showed him. He just wanted to sit down on a chair and had a cup of tea all by himself! When the flower show was over, he was driven to the palace. He put on the uniform and he had to shake hands with two hundred guests! The dinner took a long, long time. Twiddles got very bored. He thought the general and the prince were both very silly! He wanted to be a pedlar again. He slipped out of the palace in his sleeping-suit. He jumped on a horse and rode bareback to the land-side where he had left the king. He found the real king and he ‘changed back’ into a pedlar! I think this story is fascinating and entertaining. I think “being a king” is the hardest job in the world. He is not free and has to engage in numerous social activities. I hate this and I can’t bear that! I think it is blessing to be an ordinary person.
