A. Purpose of the Course

This course provides an overview on the development of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) measures and their applications in the assessment of the effectiveness in medical care. By the end of the course students will be familiar with approaches to HRQOL assessment and be able to interpret health services research that includes HRQOL measures.

B. Learning Objectives

1) To understand patient-reported outcomes (especially health outcomes) and understand different levels of measurement (competency A. 4)

2) To obtain skills in health outcome measure development including use of qualitative and community-based participation research methods

(competency G. 6)

3) To become familiar with options for analyzing and interpreting health outcome studies (competency A. 9)

4) To learn strategies for evaluating determinants of health outcomes

(competency J. 6)

C. Readings

Readings are provided at the course website: http://hpm214.med.ucla.edu/

D. Evaluation of Student Performance

Attendance and participation in class lectures is required. Emphasis is on understanding the material covered in lectures and assigned readings. Final grades will be determined by class participation (25%), final exam (50%), and two class assignments (25%). The class participation contribution to the grade will be based on attendance, instructor evaluation, and potentially peer

evaluation. The final exam will consist of approximately 75 questions. The class assignments are summarized below.

The first class assignment is to complete the SF-36 v2 survey at http://www.sf-

36.org/demos/SF-36v2.html

and turn in your completed anonymous survey on

01/13/15. Turn it your actual answers to the 36 questions (not the scores that the site provides back to you). Survey results will be aggregated by the instructor and compared to norms for educational purposes.

The 2nd class assignment is to conduct and summarize 5 cognitive interviews with a self-administered HRQOL survey instrument. Your written summary should be no more than 3 pages in length. Longer summaries will not be accepted. You are required to conduct 5 (and no more than 5) cognitive interviews with every item in your selected instrument. If you have a long instrument you can parse it up so that each respondent does not have to be interviewed on every item but 5 people need to be exposed to each item.

The cognitive interview writeup is due at 9am on 03/09/15.

Extra credit can be obtained by writing a 2-page review of a published HRQOL article. The article selected needs to be cleared with the instructor in advance.
