HOLOCAUST AWARENESS CONTEST
Entries due March 4th Awards Reception Monday April 11th 5:00 ECG
Theme for 2016: "Exploring the Holocaust: Keeping the Memory Alive”
With the passing decades, the world has fewer and fewer survivors of the Holocaust to tell their stories. Our goal is to keep the memory and the lessons of history alive by encouraging young people to examine the past and respond creatively. The contest is open to all local middle and high school students and includes three categories: prose, poetry, and (high school only) visual arts. All entries should use the following format:
A. Writing (for prose or poetry) should be in blue or black ink, neat, and legible on
8 1/2" x 11" paper with one inch margins on all sides. Typed papers are encouraged but not required. Papers should be double-spaced and pages numbered consecutively.
B. When students include specific information that should be credited to a source, a simple bibliography should be included (as the last page, in the case of a paper).
Students should use the style recommended/required by their English or history teacher.
C. Written work (if more than one page) should be stapled once in the top left corner.
No cover should be used.
No title page required.
Required heading for each entry should include with the following information: Art entries should have this information securely attached.
1. title of entry
2. student's name and grade
3.
student's school
4.
English/history/art class name and teacher
NOTE: In order to be inclusive with the prizes in the prose and poetry categories, we have established two levels of competition based on English/history classes.
Students in advanced /honors classes will receive prizes in one category—The Gerda
Weissman Klein Awards—while student in non-advanced classes will receive prizes in the Walter Storozom Awards category. Therefore, it is very important for teachers to indicate the student’s class level—average or advanced.
D. Adult/teacher assistance is limited to encouragement, discussions regarding different styles, reminders about format, and suggestions to review mechanics. Students may use peer review as part of the writing process.
