Goal 4: Identify and implement technologies to support various online instructional delivery methods, focusing on delivery of student services,
supporting student communities, and enhancing the capabilities of our course management system.
4.1
Provide technological resources students and faculty need in a robust online program.

Accomplishments
Ubiquitous computing – sufficient computer labs and wireless access
The number of computers in Library Internet Research Lab has doubled since 2009.
A new Mac Lab consisting of 20 Apple computers has been installed
Since 2009 more than 200 wireless access devises have been installed in the MSA, MSB, Fine Arts, HLRC, CE, GG, SC,
MPE and CDC.
Create courses that also include images as well as video and audio files.
In December 2010 an Instructional Assistant was reclassified to become a Multimedia Specialist. Since then images have
been digitizing for a History class, PDFs have been converted to HTML for a Geology class and audio/video content for
several ESL classes has been developed.
WLAC has renewed our subscription to Intelecom and has a new contract with Edustream. Both organizations provide
video clips for use by our instructors. Tech Fair workshops about iPhoto, Introduction to Jing & Camtasia, Podcasting,
YouTube, Edutainment, Intelecom and MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching)
have been developed and presented.
The new Instructional Media Specialist has developed workshops to assist instructors who want to develop instructional
media, PowerPoint and Video Camera Basics for Classroom Production.
An Apple Demonstration, Teaching and Learning with the iPad and the Apple genius bar @ West were presented as part of
the Tech Fair.
Increase professional development opportunities and resources for instructors using Etudes.
West is again offering hybrid Etudes training. The fall 2012 class filled up quickly and a second class is scheduled for
January 2013.

In addition to the Etudes online training and the Cyber Teachers’ Institute, several Tech Fair workshops have been
developed to assist instructors using Etudes. These include Intro to ETUDES-NG: West's Course Management System
and Digital Storage & ETUDES.
Since 2009 the annual Academic Senate conference/training stipend has increased from $100 to $150.
An Online Instructors’ Handbook was completed last spring and approved by the Academic Senate.
An iPhone application is in development.
Provide sufficient orientation to students so that they succeed in utilizing online course materials.
Education 230, the Online Student Success Lab, was developed in 2008 and, despite course reductions, has been offered
every semester since.
In 2010 a comprehensive online Etudes orientation was developed using captivate.

Can Work Study Students assist IT Staff? Can IT Internships be developed in conjunction with the CSIT Department?
Add additional computers/computer labs on an annual basis to meet current instructional needs. We need to define current
need including needed updates to current equipment.
What is a realistic/desired goal for Smart Classrooms? Where are we now? Are there plans to modify classrooms that
don’t have that technology? We need to develop an inventory and placement plan for upgrading classrooms
A pilot for the Motion Picture/Television Production Dept, will be developed, possibly using Lynda.com, to provide online
resources and to track student usage through certificate completion of various programs.
We need to determine how students can best learn to use the technology in the classroom – training in Photo Shop,
Dreamweaver, Lynda.com – develop self guided training resources with tracking and certificates of completion that are
platform non-specific.

Determine ways technology can be used to support students with common interests or common educational
objectives in electronic communities.
WLAC is one of the pilot colleges providing District email accounts to our students which provide students with access to
photo sharing, an Outlook Calendar, digital storage and Microsoft Office.

ooVoo, Skype and Live Size to determine which video/web conferencing options are best for the College. Google Voice
and Google Chat are other resources that are being researched.
In Spring 2011 for the first time online students were able to vote in ASO Elections using a web based survey.
Since 2009 West has developed two Facebook sites for domestic & international students. In 2010 a Twitter account was
developed for international students and in 2011 a Twitter account was developed for online students.
Since 2009 West has piloted two ePortfolio systems; eFolio and Mahara.
Since 2009 online instructors have begun to use wikis, podcasts, blogs, Twitter, Second Life and other Web 2.0 and Social
Networking tools.
In 2010 an Online Literary Magazine – West Voice was created.

Work with the ASO to get online student representatives for Student Clubs in order to improve and develop online campus
life opportunities.
Find a way to provide continued technical support to instructors who have participated in Tech Fair workshops.
Investigate potential uses of texting.
Encourage student collaboration by expanding use of Apple products by both students and faculty

DSP&S now has 12 computers; most of them are brand new.
Etudes now provides access to an online assessment tool
Since 2009 online chat for Counseling and SEP planning have been implemented.
The Library has developed online video and PowerPoint tutorials for students including Proquest Tutorial, Library Catalog
Tutorial, MLA Tutorial and an APA Tutorial.

Implementation Assessment
There has been expansion of online financial aid services. Students can now download all forms and returned scanned
copies via email; students can login to the SIS to view a list of missing documents and to view their financial aid award.
