Directions: Locate and describe the function and procedure of the following pieces of
safety equipment
1. Fire Blanket
2. Overhead Shower
3. Eyewash Stations
4. Fire Extinguisher
a. P.A.S.S
5. Spill Responses
a. Acids
i. Use Acid neutralizer
b. Alkali Metals (lithium, sodium, magnesium, potassium)
i. Smother with dry sand or cover with contents from a Class
“D” fire extinguisher. Use of a Class “D” fire extinguisher
is the preferred extinguishing method.
ii. Avoid contact with water.
c. White or Yellow Phosphorus
i. Blanket with wet sand or wet absorbent.
d. Bromine
i. Neutralize spill with a 5% solution of sodium thiosulfate.
ii. Absorb with inert absorbent material.
6. Goggle Cabinet
Lab Safety Rules:
1. Never work in lab alone (or without Mr. Clever)
2. Listen to Instructions, follow directions.
3. Read and Listen first, then act.
4. Ask questions if unsure
5. Wear goggles until all glassware / chemicals are put away in entire room.
6. Appropriate Clothing should be worn
a. Long pants to the shoe
b. Close toed shoes
c. Highly flammable sweaters / sweatpants
7. Contact Lenses are a risk
8. Remove all jewelry
9. Long hair is to be tied in pony tail
10. Wash hands before and after lab.
11. No practical jokes / horseplay during lab (or class for that matter)
12. No eating / drinking / chewing gum unless instructed in lab
13. Keep your work area clean and organized
14. Notify teacher if any accidents happen immediately
