Safe Work Procedure Checklist:
1. PRE-Task:

Ensure appropriate PPE is worn and that any cuts and abrasions on hands are covered with a
waterproof dressing;

Obtain paper towels, absorbent granules, sealable plastic bags, sturdy tongs or forceps, mop,
bucket, detergent, sharps bin and household bleach;

Alert others to the spill and isolate the area appropriately.
2. During:


For spills involving large amounts of blood or other body substances, employees should
contain and confine the spill by:
-
Removing visible organic matter with absorbent material (e.g. disposable paper towels);
-
Removing any broken glass or sharp material with forceps or tongs;
-
Soaking up excess liquid using an absorbent clumping agent (e.g. absorbent granules).
For spills less than 10cm in diameter, employees should contain and confine the spill by:
-
Using paper towels to mop up the spill;
-
Disposing of the used paper towels in a plastic bag.

Care should be taken to ensure waste does not contain sharp materials such as broken glass;

Using sturdy tongs or forceps, pick up sharp material and wrap securely in several layers of
newspaper;

Place contaminated waste into a sealable bag or puncture-resistant rigid walled container such as a
sharps bin;

Clean the area with warm water and detergent;

After cleaning, disinfect the area with a freshly prepared solution of 1:50 diluted household bleach
(1mL bleach to 50mL water) and leave to dry;

For small spills (spots of blood on tiles) an alcohol wipe may be sufficient.

3. POST-Task:

Clean all equipment with warm water and detergent and store dry;

Ensure plastic apron and safety glasses are clean prior to storing;

Remove and dispose of gloves into the sealable bag;

Dispose of the sealed bag into a Biological Hazard Waste disposable bin/bag or Sanitary Bin;

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry with paper towels

