1. Larry Hartsfield brought the meeting to order. The minutes for the December 3, 2008 meeting

with peer institutions.

b. History major – World option — Addition of course to required electives – was
approved

Also, the courses formerly designated Southwest Studies (SW) that deal with Native American

d. New Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) major was reviewed. The major is
primarily the old American Indian Studies major with the addition of courses in
indigenous studies and a wider selection of electives. Was tabled due to an
inconsistency in the number of hours required for the major (proposal states 45 on the
top but only 39 on the bottom), failure to respond adequately to the impact study, and
clarification of the handling of NAIS 4xxa in the distribution areas.
e. New Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) minor was reviewed. The minor is
primarily the old American Indian Studies minor with the addition of courses in
indigenous studies and a wider selection of electives. Was tabled due to an
inconsistency in the number of hours required for the minor (proposal states 15-19 but
required lower division classes (7) plus minimum of 9 upper division classes add to at
least 16 hours), failure to respond adequately to the impact study, and clarification of
the handling of NAIS 4xxa in the distribution areas.
f.
Revised Southwest Studies major was reviewed. Changes were made to take into
account prefix changes as noted above, to add new electives, and to switch the
distribution areas of certain electives – was approved.
