GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE JOB DESCRIPTION POST TITLE: Investigative Support Officer, (CAT C/Secondary Phase Team) DEPARTMENT/DIVISION/BRANCH: Crime, Serious Crime Division SECTION/UNIT: Major Investigation Team (MIT) GRADE: F RESPONSIBLE TO: Office Manager Deputy SIO RESPONSIBLE FOR: N/A AIM OF JOB: To provide investigative support to the Major Incident Team (MIT), by taking responsibility for functions concerned with the investigations into murder and Major Crime Investigation MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Investigate allocated ‘actions’, completing research and telephone enquiries where appropriate and submitting action results Ensure that statements are obtained from witnesses including police officers, professional and expert witnesses, ensuring that statements are accurate in detail and submitted. To prepare paperwork in relation to obtaining search warrants from the courts. In conjunction with police officers, execute search warrants and undertake searches. The correct seizure of suspect material including the appropriate labelling, recording and safe handling of all exhibits. The examination of all seized articles in particular the viewing of CCTV, DVD, videos and where appropriate material held in computer format e.g. floppy discs, CD ROM. Preparing viewing logs and evidencing including taking of witness statements to prove provenance and continuity of exhibits. To prepare documentation in relation to warrants of further detention. To assist in the processing of detained persons including obtaining fingerprints, photograph, DNA etc and other documentation. Assist in the completion of files and associated paperwork in respect of prosecutions Investigative Support Officer, MIT (CAT C/Secondary Phase Team) March 2007 When required, provide a balanced, accurate and reliable summary of tape-recorded interviews in accordance with the Manual of Guidance. Conduct research on persons of interest with internal police departments and external agencies e.g. GMPICs, OIS, VIS, Crime Recording, PNC, HOLMES2. Assisting with the recording, inputting of exhibits onto the HOLMES2 database and entering property and exhibits into the GMP property system when items are transferred to divisional property stores. To prepare statements of evidence, attend court and give evidence when required. To support witness management, ensuring witnesses are contacted and transported to and from court where required. To provide administrative and clerical support for the core functions of the Major Incident Team in accordance with MIRSAP, answer telephone enquiries, obtain and accurately record information, completing and submitting messages into the Incident Room. To record and maintain accurate financial records and expenditure on behalf of the SIO when requested. Complete proof reading of typed documentation in MIR including officers’ reports, witness statements, transcripts of interviews etc. Assist the enquiry team with management of documentation including filing and storing of disclosure documentation and transfer to murder library. Carried out duties/tasks relevant to the post including the preparation of criminal prosecution files, comprehensive statement taking and experience of interviewing witnesses Desirable Typed complex reports, produced graphics, tables etc. Knowledge and experience of the police service*. Previous experience of serious and major crime investigation. Evidence of attending and giving evidence in criminal court proceedings. Able to remain calm under pressure. Experience of suspect interviewing. Knowledge of Criminal Law and procedures relating to the role, particularly understanding of PACE and CPIA and Police procedures. Ability to liaise with officers and deal with queries on own initiative. TRAINING/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED Essential Good general standard of education. Keyboard experience and knowledge of computer applications especially word processing applications.
