ICE CONDITION FORECAST 09.03.-18.03.2006.
Within the next 10-day over the Baltic Sea region remains moderate frost period. At night the air
temperature remains to -8…-13º, in north part of the Gulf to -16º, but daytime it will be around
-2…-7º. Some short-range snow is expected in the beginning and the end of the period, but in the
mid of period – mainly dry. In the beginning of the period is expected slow north-west, north
wind, in the end of the period veering to south-east, south.
In the central and western part of the Gulf of Riga ice amount remains in thickness to 25-40 cm,
locally in hummocks to 70-90 cm, but in the east part of the Gulf of Riga remains fast ice in
thickness to 40-60 cm. On seaboard of the Baltic Sea locally remains young coastal ice, further of
it the belts of drift ice in thickness to 5-10 cm.

Gulf of Riga (Moonsund)
on coastal areas the belts of the open brash ice in
thickness to 15-25 cm, in the end of the period close
drift ice.
Gulf of Riga (northern coast)
Fast ice 35-50 cm thick, locally hummocks in height to
70-90 cm and ice fields.
Gulf of Riga (eastern coast)
Fast ice 30-45 cm thick, in the beginning of the period
on coastal areas in south-east part close to open 15-25
cm thick drift ice, in the end of the period open to very
open drift ice.
Gulf of Riga (southern coast)
Locally 25-35 cm thick fast ice. The belts of the very
close to compact drift ice cakes in thickness to 10-20
cm, in the end of the period the belts of the close to
open drift ice.
Gulf of Riga (western coast)
Locally fast ice in thickness to 30-45 cm. Very close to
compact drift ice in thickness to 25-40 cm, locally
hummocks in height to 60-80 cm.
Irbes Strait
Very close to compact drift 25-40 cm thick ice, locally
hummocks in height to 70-90 cm. In west part of the
Strait close drift 10-20 cm thick ice.
Riga – Kolka fairway
Very close to compact 25-40 cm thick drift ice, locally
hummocks in height to 60-80 cm.
Irbes Strait – Ventspils fairway
Mainly close to open drift ice in thickness to
10-15 cm.
Ventspils – Lithuanian sea border The belts of very open drift ice in thickness to
fairway
5 cm.
Baltic Sea – coast of Latvia
In the beginning of the period locally fast ice to
1 km wide, in the end of the period fast ice amount
will decrease. In direction to the Sea very open drift
ice.
