AZTI’s Staff in ECASA project
Angel Borja graduated in Biology, in 1981, obtained a PhD in
Biological Sciences, in 1984, and a Master on Environmental
Management, in 1991 (all at the University of the Basque
Country, Spain), and has worked as Head of Project in AZTITecnalia since 1985. He has participated in more than 100
Spanish and European funded projects, over 25 years, both in
scientific research and consultancy.
He has published more than 100 scientific papers and books,
being a member of the Editorial Boards of Continental Shelf
Research and Marine Pollution Bulletin.
He works in several areas of research, including: (i) the development of indicators for
ICZM and European Directives (including the Water Framework Directive) and marine
protection; (ii) marine and estuarine monitoring, marine pollution and water quality; (iii)
environmental impacts in the sea, marine and benthic ecology; (iv) studies of
oceanography, meteorological and biological time-series; (v) marine resources
exploitation and management; and (vi) biological oceanography, including relationships
between ocean-meteorological variables and marine resources, i.e. fish recruitment
and abundance (anchovy, mackerel, tuna, cod, etc.), algae abundance and distribution
(Gelidium) and benthic communities (hard and soft bottom) abundance and biomass.
Manuel González is a Civil Engineer (UPC, Barcelona, Spain),
specialized in Oceanography and Marine Dynamics. He has
worked in AZTI-Tecnalia since 1997 (currently he his Head of the
Marine Dynamics Area) and has participated in projects on marine
environment, wave measurements, tide, sea currents and physical
characterization. In oceanography, his speciality is numerical
modelling of sea currents, tides and pollutants dispersion, and the
application of these models for studying dispersion of salt and
thermal plumes, wastewater outfall, oil spills and aquaculture
cages.
Julien Mader is an Engineer in Marine Technologies (ISITV,
University of Toulon, France), specialized in physical
oceanography, instrumentation and modelling. He has worked
in AZTI since 2000 on oceanographic instrumentation (oceanmeteorological stations, tidal recorders, currentmeters, drifting
buoys, etc.), data processing and modelling. He has been
involved in six European projects on fish recruitment and
abundance, marine protected areas, dispersion modelling and
observation tools for littoral management.
Paolo Gyssels was Graduated as Environmental Engineer at
the “Politecnico di Milano” (Italy) in 1997, and Master in Marine
Technology and Science at the University of Cantabria
(Santander, Spain). He has participated in over than 30
investigation and consulting projects, as AZTI’s junior
researcher (since 1999). At least 4 projects are European
projects (BIOMEX, EUROCEANS, ELME, ECASA). He has
good experiences with marine environment and marine
dynamics, including experiences with local and national
administrations (Basque Country, Spain) and private enterprises
(fisheries, engineering enterprises, etc…). He participated in some relevant publication
related to Oceanography, in English and Spanish language. His main skills cover
physical oceanography, littoral or sub-littoral processes, sub-ground water, surface
water, sanitary engineering and hydraulic engineering.
Juan Bald was Graduated in Biological Sciences (University
of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain) and Maitrise de Sciences de
L´Environnement, Section Océanologie (University of
Bordeaux, France), develop their professional tasks in the
Marine Research Unit of the AZTI-Tecnalia since 1999. He
works in several areas of research, including: (i) the
development of indicators for ICZM and European Directives
(including the Water Framework Directive) and marine
protection; (ii) marine and estuarine monitoring, marine
pollution and water quality (iii) environmental impact
assessment and site selection of fish farming facilities in open
sea, (iv) shellfish resource management, (iv) ecological
modelisation.
Iñigo Muxika was Graduated in Biology (University of
Navarra, Pamplona, Spain) and specialized in Environmental
and Agricultural Biology. He has worked in AZTI-Tecnalia
since 2000 by means of different grants and as junior
researcher since 2004. He works in several areas of
research, including: (i) marine and estuarine monitoring,
marine pollution and water quality; (ii) environmental impacts
in the sea; (iii) benthic ecology; (iv) benthic resources
exploitation and management; (v) the development of benthic
indicators for the Water Framework Directive; and (vi)
biological oceanography, including relationships between
ocean-meteorological variables and marine resources. He is
involved in two European projects: ECASA and INDECO.
