About the Instructor: Exploring, sketching and photographing the Canadian wilderness from coast to
coast continually provides enormous inspiration for RoseMarie's paintings. Her rich palette and lively brush
work combined with her understanding of composition and draftsmanship allow her to portray the natural
world in a truthful, dramatic and realistic manner.
Hiking, camping, canoeing and rafting in wilderness areas allows RoseMarie to indulge her abiding
fascination with rugged Canadian landscapes. Excursions to the Yukon, the Northwest Territories, rafting
on the Nahanni and Tatshenshini Rivers as well as eight weeks in the High Arctic have given her a unique
insight into the vastness of Canada, her fragile eco systems, flora, fauna and cultures.
In addition to the extreme wilderness, RoseMarie also enjoys painting rural towns and landscapes,
expressing herself with a sensitive and accomplished style using oils, acrylics or watercolours.
Born and educated in Toronto she studied watercolour and oil painting, composition, museum studies and
perspective with Archibald (Dan) Logan. RoseMarie studied graphic art disciplines, colour theory, design
and rendering with Vince McGill as well as layout, life studies and illustration with Fred Savard and history
of art, sculpture and anatomy with William Clements.
Course Content:
RoseMarie will guide beginner and intermediate artists through the step by step process of creating a
landscape painting in acrylics. Learn about acrylic paints, painting surfaces, brushes, colour mixing,
composition, acrylic mediums and how to employ them with confidence in your own paintings.
Acrylic paints have very unique ‘forgiving qualities’ that allow for more comfortable, less threatening
experimentation than watercolours. They may be layered in thin glazes and washes very reminiscent of
watercolour. It is possible to paint light over dark with acrylics. They may be applied more heavily with
textured brushwork as in oil painting. Amongst their great advantages; acrylic paints are extremely versatile
and dry much more rapidly than oils. Discover techniques in acrylic painting that will allow you to express
your unique vision creatively and with more self confidence.
In a relaxed and friendly environment you will broaden your knowledge through RoseMarie’s painting
demonstrations and one on one instruction as well as stimulating group discussions. Beginning with her
initial response to a winter landscape in the La Cloche RoseMarie will explain and demonstrate the steps
involved in creating her painting “La Cloche in White.”
Whether your desire is to take up painting after a hiatus, you are a novice, or you are an intermediate level
artist this is an opportunity to expand your awareness as an artist, enabling you to paint with more self
confidence in your ability to handle acrylics with increased self assurance .
