Placement Checklist

Prior to start of placement

 Complete/update Practice Educator’s Personal Profile

 Compile an agency/service profile

 Identifying support for self e.g. from Line Manager, Learning and Development

Advisor, Practice Learning Forum

Negotiating work-load relief for self

Identifying cover for times when not available (holidays, emergencies, etc)

Clarifying that Student’s PVG check has been processed by the Professional

Development Unit (PDU)

Obtaining course handbook

Obtaining Evidence Log (Available from PDU)

Arranging Student’s pre-placement visit

Identifying work space for Student

Ensuring Student has access to phone, PC, e-mail, stationery

 Clarifying admin support available to Student

Identifying colleagues in your team who will support the student and or provide work

 Clarifying that SWIFT access, group wise login and SWIFT training requests have been initiated by the PDU

 Arranging for Students drivers licence check to be completed and signed by team leader to give access to pool cars for Student

 Collating an information pack containing copies of relevant information about the placement agency (list of useful resources to visit, telephone extension list, map, bus time-table etc)

 Advising team of Student placement

Familiarisation with university guidance for placement

Between Pre-Placement Visit and Start of Placement

Identifying suitable work

 Making arrangements for Student’s induction week(s) (arranging visits, shadowing, meetings with key people, lunch etc).

 Second placement Students should be encouraged to take some responsibility for this themselves

 Identifying room for supervision

 Check the students file for specific learning or support needs

Early Stage of Placement

 Showing Student around building and introduction to key people in office

 Identifying own holiday dates as early as possible

 Outline induction plans

 Ensuring Student is familiar with relevant agency policy and procedures including health and safety procedures, Stirling Council child protection procedures, the Forth

Valley Inter-agency child protection procedures, complaints and code of conduct procedures

 Linking Students into the local Student group (Delivered by Learning and

Development Advisor)

 Clarifying Student study time arrangements

 Encouraging Student to put study time into diary

 Arranging supervision on first week and sessions as far ahead as possible

 Clarifying supervision format and expectations

Discuss methods of obtaining feed back from services users/colleagues

Identify learning opportunities to meet student’s learning needs

Clarify team/ service requirements regarding confidentiality

Assisting Student with Placement Agreement

Allocate initial work

Throughout Placement

 Providing weekly supervision sessions

 Providing day-to-day advice and guidance for Student

 Identifying learning opportunities

 Negotiating suitable work for Student with agency and Practice Educator

Providing on-going feedback to Student

Assessing Student’s progress in relation to the SisWE standards and Key Capabilities

Arranging and attending 4-way meetings

Keeping a record of evidence

Regularly check the student’s agency recordings, files and reports

Collating evidence for interim and final reports, including colleague and service user feedback

Advising Student of potential difficulties

Addressing any difficulties Student may be experiencing

Alerting University and Learning and Development Advisor to any potential problems

 Identifying additional learning needs

 Reviewing workload

 Undertaking direct observations of Student, providing written feedback using university format

 Review supervision and arrangements for the Student

 Review practice agreement with student and amend if requires

End of Placement

Support student with endings with service users and colleagues

Ensure students cases are transferred/ended with case summaries or updates

 Compile final report, including feedback from service users and colleagues

Identify future learning needs with the student for their next placement/future practice.

 Complete placement quality assurance forms
