Project Plan: Knowledge Building and Research (January – December 2009) Project name: Knowledge Building and Research Project team: Mary (50%) as team leader, linking to global team Jyrki (8%), Roxana (17%), Niamh (16%), research assistant (1%) regional levels Alex (3%), Patti (27%), Ashish (13%), Esther (26%), regional analyst (20%) and country programmes Senthil (2%) and Denise (2%) Background The global emphasis on building knowledge societies has compelled organizations and agencies to nurture environments that encourage individuals and teams to engage in permanent cycles of learning. Senge (1994)1 suggests that learning in organizations involves the continuous testing of experience, and the transformation of that experience into knowledge that is accessible to the whole organization and relevant to its core purpose. GeSCI’s core business is ‘knowledge for all’ and the processes of building knowledge and research underpin all programming - supporting the strategic advisory services provided to partners, while informing advocacy strategies at global, regional and national levels. The challenge will be to capture the continuous dynamic engendered by vertical and horizontal synergies in what are essentially the ‘messy realities’ of our engagement environments in a manner which is systematic and which will foster learning and development. The Knowledge building and research objectives are to: Develop mechanisms to nurture systematic organizational review of progress and emergent change Build appropriate partnerships and collaborations to facilitate the work of research and development in areas identified through review process Support global, regional and country programmes with services and products underpinned by sound and rigorous research Develop a platform to facilitate the sharing of tools and good practices and dissemination of knowledge created GeSCI organizes its knowledge building and research activities on ICT in Education around five "thematic areas" where there are common gaps in knowledge, expertise or capacity identified in engagements with partner countries and/or in regional and global forums. The five thematic areas are: 1. Educational Management and ICTs including Monitoring and Evaluation 2. ICT Infrastructure, Connectivity and Accessibility 3. Integration of ICTs into Teaching and Learning 4. Teacher Education and ICTs 5. Educational Content and ICTs 1 Senge, P. 1994.
