Typical Specification for Lochinvar® Commercial Electric Steam Boiler
The ELECTRIC STEAM BOILER shall be a Lochinvar Commercial Electric Steam Boiler, Model BS __(12, 16, 20, 24,
30, 36, 42, 48, 54)-________, rated at_________kW, for a balanced 3-phase, 3- wire delta load at __________volts, 3 phase,
_____Hertz. The Steam Boiler shall have a rated output of ________pounds per hour from and at 212°F. The Steam Boiler
shall be available with electrical inputs from 15 kW up to 3080 kW. Steam Boiler shall be designed for a low pressure steam
heating system with an operating pressure at _______pounds per square inch and a design pressure of _______ pounds per
square inch.
The boiler vessel shall be constructed in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requirements, stamped
and registered with the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessels. The vessel shall be equipped with (threaded) (flanged)
______” outlet, safety valve, feed water inlet, and surface and bottom blow down connections as required. All plumbing
connections shall be of extra heavy pipe.
The vessel shall be enclosed in a rectangular 16-gauge jacket and be completely insulated with a 3” blanket of fiberglass
insulation. The jacket assembly shall include a full sized electrical control panel separated by an air gap. A 2” minimum gap
shall be provided between the vessel and electrical panel to keep components and controls at a reduced ambient temperature for
extended service life. The electrical control panel shall have two full-length hinged doors with key locks for access to heating
elements and controls. The assembled electric steam boiler jacket and electrical control panel shall have an acrylic enamel
finish. The assembled electric steam boiler shall have a common structural steel channel base supporting both the electrical
panel enclosure and vessel jacket. The steel base allows ease of installation and provides proper support as a permanent base.
Electrical entrance shall be made through the top of the electrical control panel. All field electrical wiring connections to the
boiler shall be made to a main terminal block(s). There shall be ________main terminal block(s) with ________wires per phase
per entrance. All internal wiring shall be made to solderless terminal lug wiring connections. Wiring to be color coded or
numbered for ease of servicing. All power circuits to heating elements shall be fused with cartridge type fuses having a
minimum 100,000 amp interrupting capacity. Operation of the heating elements shall be switched by a three pole magnetic
contactors operated by a 120 volt control circuit. The control circuit shall use a built-in transformer to reduce line voltage to
120 volts for operation of the control circuit components. The control circuit shall be fused on the primary side as well as fused
and grounded on the secondary side.
The Steam Boiler shall be provided with a proportional pressure control and a solid state progressive step control to balance
heat input to demand. The step control shall provide _______steps of load. The proportional pressure controller shall have an
adjustable steam pressure setpoint and throttling range. The Steam Boiler shall be provided with an adjustable auto reset high
limit pressure switch and an additional manual reset high limit pressure switch.
The immersion heating elements shall be low watt density with an incoly outer sheath material for long life. Each heating
element shall be sized at a maximum of 75 watts per square inch of heating surface. The heating elements shall be a three beam
design and mount in individual tank flanges. Each heating element shall not exceed 18 kW of input per flanged connection.
The electric steam boiler shall be a complete factory package with the following trim furnished as standard: On-Off pilot
switch with pilot light to manually operate the 120 volt control circuit, status pilot lights for each stage of operation, preheat
switch with pilot light on units above 240 kW, a combination float-type level control / low water cut-off, a manual reset low
water cut-off, pressure gauge with cock, feed water stop and check valves, full port bottom blow down valve(s), water level
sight gauge with blow down valve, and an ASME rated pressure relief valve(s). The steam boiler shall be factory assembled,
wired and tested. The entire hot water boiler shall be U.L. Listed and provide a 3 year limited warranty on the vessel and a 1
year limited warranty on parts.
