ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. Minutes from the February 14, 2008, meeting approved electronically.

Communication.
3. Items reported for inclusion in the Undergraduate Catalog by another standing committee of the
Undergraduate Coordinating Council; APASC approvals from their March 5, 2008, meeting.
Smith noted that these are changes to clean up catalog language for the new student information

Tatara asked about the comment on page 1, “Students are strongly encouraged to
take the following courses…,” and is that appropriate catalog language. It was noted
that programs may include a list of recommended courses, so this is appropriate.
Smith pointed out that this is an existing program that has already been approved.
The change reflects the move of the Minor in Environmental Management Systems
from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (see CLAS #9) to the College of
Engineering and Engineering Technology. Goehring moved, seconded by Newsom,
to RECEIVE THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULAR ITEMS IN
ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY #9 (2/28/08). Motion
passed unanimously.
College of Liberal
Arts & Sciences #9
Talsma pointed out the deletion of the Minor in Environmental Management
Systems, which is moving to the College of Engineering and Engineering
Technology. Millis asked about the addition of ENGL 250 to four emphases for the
B.S. in chemistry and didn’t the department need to check for impact on English.
Smith pointed out that it is noted in the rationale that the Department of English was
consulted. Tatara asked if the hours for Emphasis 5 for the B.S. in chemistry should
now be 72-75, not 71-75. Smith will make that change editorially. Aase moved,
seconded by Newsom, to RECEIVE THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULAR
ITEMS IN LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES #9 (2/13/08). Motion passed
unanimously.
OLD BUSINESS
1. Subcommittee on contract majors and KNPE 101 letter suffixed courses. Committee members
reviewed the information sent by the colleges. For AY 2006-07, there were no KNPE 101 letter
suffixed courses. There were seven contract majors from the College of Education, one from
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, five from College of Visual and Performing Arts, and none
from the Colleges of Business, Engineering and Engineering Technology, and Health and
Human Sciences. Committee members asked what they were to be considering when reviewing
the materials. Smith noted that they should look to see if one contract major seemed to be
offered to a certain number of students that may warrant the department creating a new major.
The committee talked about the contract majors in computer music; there are five. Newsom
noted that these are students at various points in their college careers; sophomores through
seniors. He added that unless there was more demand, the school would not be adding computer
music as a new major any time soon. Talsma pointed out that the contract majors from the
Department of Teaching and Learning are to enable students who will not be able to pursue
teacher certification to complete a degree. Discussion followed regarding the purpose of

evaluating contract majors. Aase asked if the Undergraduate Coordinating Council acts on the
information presented. Newsom recalled that this has always just been informational. Aase then
wondered if there is no action, then why is the evaluation of contract majors in the system.
There was clarification as to why contract majors are offered and how they are perceived by
employers. They are a unique grouping of courses and independent study and they are generally
received well by employers. Students are able to list on their resumes the name of the contract
major. Aase moved, seconded by Goehring, to RECEIVE THE CONTRACT MAJOR
INFORMATION FROM THE COLLEGES. Motion passed unanimously.
2. LAS #4. Course revision to COMS 495A was tabled to clarify the intent to offer variable credit,
or a one-credit-hour course that can be repeated. Other catalog changes for COMS to Emphasis
1. Rhetoric and Public Communication, Emphasis 2. Media Studies, and Emphasis 3.
Organization/Corporate Communication were tabled for clarification of how many hours
students are required to take in COMS 407, 495A, and 495B. Plus why did they add “-3” for
407 and 495B then also add “Students must take this course for 1 credit hour” for Emphasis 1
and 2.
Item LAS#4 was removed from the table for reconsideration. Correspondence from the college
was provided to CUC members explaining that the department’s intent is that the course be
available for variable credit, not to be repeated. Smith explained that for the other catalog
changes, the language that states “Students must take 1 credit hour in this course” is reflective of
the online catalog formatting. Aase stated that he still didn’t think the hours were clear for
COMS 495A, but the department will have to deal with any confusion. The change in hours for
COMS 357 and COMS 358 from 3 to 4 was questioned and Smith noted that the CUC already
approved the revision to those courses. Aase moved, seconded by Millis, to APPROVE THE
REMAINDER OF THE UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULAR ITEMS FROM THE COLLEGE
OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES #4 (10/17/07). Motion passed unanimously.
3. VPA #3. These minutes were tabled November 8, 2007, for verification of nonduplication from
Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment (ETRA) for new course
ARTE 343. This item remains tabled.
