JUNIOR HIGH SERVICE PROGRAM WHAT IS THE SERVICE REQUIREMENT? Junior High students are required to perform 20 hours of service per semester. Service hours count for 20 points each semester in Religion class. WHAT KIND OF SERVICE WILL FULFILL THE SERVICE REQUIREMENT? You may do service in any of the following areas: -School -Community -Church/parish -Family You may choose to do your service in one area or in more than one area. The only exception is that a maximum of 7 hours per semester of service done for the immediate family will be given credit for the service requirement. HOW SHOULD I LOG MY SERVICE HOURS? Service hours should be logged on the service hour record sheet. Record sheets will be available in Room 113 and on my teacher web page. You should write the date of service (month and year) and a brief description of the service. If you cannot remember the date, you can write the season and year (example: Summer, 2014) WHO SHOULD SIGN MY LOG SHEET? The adult moderator or your parents can sign for the service you have logged. Some moderators will give you a certificate. In this case, just attach the certificate to the log sheet instead of having them sign the log. If you lose this certificate, just have your parents sign the log sheet. WHAT IF I AM AN ALTAR SERVER? Log your hours on the service log sheet, and have your parents sign. Please do not ask Ms. Dowd or one of the priests to sign. WHEN SHOULD I HAND IN MY SERVICE HOURS? You can hand in your hours anytime after you have completed your 20 hours for the semester. There is a basket marked COMPLETED SERVICE HOURS in Rm.113. Service hours for the first semester are due December 18. Service hours for the second semester are due May 20. DO SERVICE HOURS CARRY OVER? If you earned more than 20 hours for the first semester, the extra hours will carry over to the Second Semester. I will keep track of how many carried over, so you do not need to record them again. Service hours do not carry over from grades 7 to 8. WHEN CAN I START TO EARN SERVICE HOURS FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR? You can begin earning service hours in May to count for the following school year. HOW CAN I FIND OUT ABOUT SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES? Service opportunities for the School and Church are frequently announced in Religion class, and will be posted on Miss Tedeschi’s teacher web page (http://teacherweb.com/OH/StGabrielSchool/MissTedeschi) Service opportunities can be found on I-Volunteer on the school web page. Service opportunities are posted in the weekly Church bulletin and on the parish website. You can contact agencies in the community about volunteering. Most agencies are looking for good help! You can check out your neighborhood and extended family, and offer to help persons/families in need of assistance (Senior Citizens, homebound persons, etc). QUESTIONS?
