H2O Conservation Strategies Water Conservation is easy & can help you save: Money: a leaky pipe of faucet increases your water bill Energy: purchase appliances that are energy efficient Environment: the less water we use, the more water now & in the future for all Chang your habits: There are many ways to save water all around your home. Check for leaks often. Most leaks are easy to find and repair. Fixing leaky pipes and faucets can save hundreads (or thousands) of gallons per year. Use water-saving devices. Install water-efficient & low-flow fixtures to cut the amount of water you use. Check your water meter. Check it at night and again in the morning (before anyone uses water.) Subtracting the first reading from the second can let you know if you have a leak. Look for water saving features when buying new appliances & purchase low-flow toilets. Curbing Water Wasting Habits: Outside: Use mulch, soil additives, & plants that require less water to limit water use For lawns, water as little as possible, when it is cool & not windy. Let grass grow taller in hot weather. Use hose nozzle that shuts off, & always shut off faucet when finished. Follow any water restrictions in your area! Inside: Store water in refridgerator to cool, rather than running through tap. Thaw frozen foods in refridgerator or with microwave, rather than under running water. Only run dishwasher when it’s full. Don’t run water when you wash dishes. Keep showers short and take shallow baths. Turn off water when you brush teeth or shave. Flush toilet only when necessary. Only wash full loads of laundry.
