2011 RICARDO MILEDI NEUROSCIENCE TRAINING PROGRAM Neuroscience: from basic mechanisms to brain diseases March 14 – April 9, 2011 Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas “Clemente Estable” - MEC Facultad de Medicina and Facultad de Ciencias - UdelaR Montevideo, Uruguay COURSE DIRECTORS: Dr. Omar Macadar, Department of Neurophysiology, Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas “Clemente Estable”; and Dr. Federico Dajas, Department of Neurochemistry, Instituto de Investigaciones Biológicas “Clemente Estable.” Peluffo, Silvia Olivera, Patricia Cassina, Fernanda Blasina, Federico Dajas. Foreign faculty: José Fuentealba (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile), Claudio Da Cunha (UFPR), Ramón Bernabeu (UBA) and Stephen B. McMahon (King’s College London, UK). GENERAL GOAL: The aim of this 4-week course is to provide a comprehensive view of both relevant concepts and current techniques in Neuroscience. Lectures and seminars of topics related to the practical work will be made by local faculty and invited professors. The course is composed of 4 modules that will have their own dynamics and will cover a broad range of cutting-edge neuroscience topics: 4) NEURAL SYSTEMS AND BEHAVIOR. This module will focus on the neural mechanisms underlying behavior, perception, and cognition based on 3 neural systems: vertebrate auditory systems, sensory-motor integration in the leech, and active electroreception of weakly electric fish. We will explore these neural systems at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels to highlight general strategies of neural control of behavior across evolution. Local faculty: Angel Caputi, José Luis Peña, Ana Silva. Foreign faculty: William Kristan (UC San Diego), Peter Narins (UCLA), Lidia Szczupak (Universidad de Buenos Aires). 1) CELLULAR NEUROPHSIOLOGY: MEMBRANES, NEURONS AND SYNAPSES. Several topics will be discussed, such as neuronal excitability, synaptic transmission, neuronal coding and synaptic plasticity. Local faculty: Omar Macadar, Gonzalo Pizarro, Gustavo Brum, Michel Borde, Alberto Pereda, Sebastian Curti. Foreign faculty: Washington Buño (Instituto Ramón y Cajal, CSIC), Pablo Castillo (Albert Einstein College of Medicine), David Fernandez de Sevilla (Instituto Ramón y Cajal, CSIC). 2) DEVELOPMENT AND NEUROGENESIS: THE ASSEMBLY AND PLASTICITY OF NEURAL NETWORKS. The topics to be discussed in this module include: development of the nervous system, establishment of neuronal polarity, development and plasticity of the synapse, and adult neurogenesis. Local faculty: Rafael Cantera, Omar Trujillo-Cenoz, Raúl E. Russo, Flavio Zolessi. Foreign faculty: Stephen Noctor (UC Davis), Nicholas C. Spitzer (UCSD), Benedikt Berninger (University of Munich). 3) CNS PATHOLOGIES: NEUROCHEMICAL, MOLECULAR BASIS AND NEW STRATEGIES FOR DRUG DELIVERY. In this module several diseases of the nervous system will be discussed such as neuropathy, Parkinson´s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, neurometabolic diseases, and addiction. Local faculty: Giselle Prunell, Cecilia Scorza, Hugo AUDIENCE: The primary audience is graduate students from Latin American and the Caribbean. Applicants must be able to communicate in English, as many lectures and discussions will be conducted in this language. All students will be required to present and discuss their results. Full financial support for traveling and housing expenses will be provided. In addition, a travel award to attend the 2011 Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting will be provided. A total of 18 course participants will be selected. HOW TO APPLY: Please see attached application for information or visit www.sfn.org/miledi. Deadline for applications is December 20, 2010. For more information, please contact Florencia Arredondo (escuela@iibce.edu.uy).
